A Message from the Dean

Thank you for visiting the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences website.  If you are considering attending Fort Lewis College, we encourage you to examine the wide range of opportunities available to you within a liberal arts setting.  Fort Lewis College and the Four Corners region can provide an ideal environment for all students to actively explore diverse academic and cultural interests, and we invite you to contact us directly or better yet, to visit Durango and see our campus for yourself.

Fort Lewis College is Colorado’s only public liberal arts college.  As a member of COPLAC (the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges), we offer a broad range of courses designed to promote both critical and creative thinking.  The nine departments housed in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (Art, English, History, Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Southwest Studies/American Indian Studies, and Theatre) are at the very center of this liberal arts tradition.  Faculty and staff work together to assist our students as they acquire the knowledge and develop the skills necessary to meet many of the challenges presented in the 21st century.

All courses at Fort Lewis College are taught by professors (not graduate assistants), and each of our highly credentialed faculty members is dedicated to teaching excellence. Class sizes are relatively small, allowing for increased interaction with both instructors and fellow students.

Outside the classroom, our campus offers countless opportunities for participation in intellectual, cultural, and recreational activities.   Students are encouraged to become involved in fields outside their academic major, and this exposure to a variety of perspectives further strengthens the well-rounded aspect of a Fort Lewis College education.

Please click on the links listed under academic programs to view specific information regarding any of the nine departments in AHSS.  If we can provide you with any additional information or put you in touch with a particular department, please also feel free to contact our office.  Again, I encourage you to schedule a campus visit to experience firsthand the high quality programs available to all students at FLC.
