A message to prospective students

We hope that you find the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences website helpful, particularly if you are a student considering enrolling in Fort Lewis College . I truly believe we can offer you a high quality and unique educational experience that will maximize your future career opportunities and be personally enriching.

Fort Lewis College is the only Colorado campus that is a designated member of an elite organization of national public liberal arts colleges, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges . This designation reflects our dedication to a broad, liberal arts approach to your undergraduate education, establishing a knowledge base important in today's ever-changing world. Because a liberal arts education provides you with an exposure to many ideas and perspectives, knowledge content, and the ability to think clearly, you will be well prepared for any professional career opportunity you should choose. Precisely for those reasons, for example, medical and law school admissions have begun to favor liberal arts educated students over candidates from narrower, more strictly discipline-based backgrounds.

You will also find the size of Fort Lewis College to be ideal. We have approximately 4,500 resident students. This mid-sized enrollment means that your classes, not too large in size, will promote learning, allow you to get to know your professors (and professors to get to know you), and to make meaningful connections with other students. Not only does this “personalized touch” mean that you will not get lost in a large crowd of other students, but it also becomes an important way to keep you on track to graduate, as well as assist you with your eventual career choice.

Fort Lewis College offers you many exciting opportunities outside the classroom as well. In fact, we encourage this as part of the liberal arts experience! Choices include opportunities for foreign study and travel, and participating in plays and other dramatic presentations, in symphony, band, or choral organizations, in a variety of discipline-based clubs and organizations, and in exciting outdoor programs that includes hiking, camping, skiing, mountain biking, and river rafting in the beautiful Four Corners region. And these are only a few of the possibilities!

If you have not already visited the College, I would encourage you to come and spend a few days in Durango and on our campus. A visit will certainly help confirm that this is a special place in which to study, work, and play. Also, do not hesitate to call on me if you think that I can provide you with further information or help connect you with someone in a specific program.

Sincerely,

John L. Ninnemann, Dean
