Community Based Learning & Research

Mission Statement 

According to the College’s strategic planning documents, “preparing citizens for the common good in an increasingly complex world” is part of the mission of Fort Lewis College and community-based learning and research (CBLR) is an avenue through which Fort Lewis may transform its students into informed and engaged citizens.  President Bartel has set a goal of “enhancing community-based learning and research opportunities for all students, with a target of 100% participation for the 2010 freshmen class and beyond.”

To achieve the President’s goal, the Center for Civic Engagement is working to imbed community-based experiences in the curricular and co-curricular lives of Fort Lewis’ students.  The Center assists academic departments and individual faculty in engaging their students in community- based problem solving and supports faculty scholarship in the areas of community-based learning and research.   In addition, the Center supports student leadership and volunteerism through the Service Tree club, AmeriCorps scholarships, off-campus federal work study placements, and the Volunteer Central database.
