Links to Helpful Websites
The process of identifying a source of funding for a research project can seem daunting to a prospective researcher. In fact, there are thousands of agencies and foundations that have funds available. It can be helpful to speak with other researchers in your particular area of interest to obtain this information, as well as making direct contact with agencies. Another method might be to simply make note of the source of funding that is always credited in peer-reviewed journal articles related to your area of interest.
Some sources may be identified simply by searching via a number of popular internet search engines, using the designation “undergraduate research,” or another appropriate description. Other academic institutions have compiled lists of sources for research funding similar to the one presented here that may be of additional help. These listings contain invaluable information relating to sources as well as proposal writing tools. Although this list is far from exhaustive, it provides a wide variety of potential sources.
ACADEMIC RESEARCH INFORMATION SYSTEM (ARIS)
This site is basically a search engine for identifying possible sources of funding. A search on “undergraduate research opportunities” produced a listing of projects in several subcategories, including biomedical, natural sciences, and social sciences. Some searches require access through signing-in; others do not.
COMMUNITY OF SCIENCE (COS)
This site provides access to 22,000 records that are updated daily, representing over 400,000 funding opportunities. Several services are available through the COS Workbench that is free-of-charge to individual users, and that can be customized. Services outside the Workbench suite appear to require a subscription at cost to the subscriber.
FEDERAL REGISTER
The Federal Register provides legal notices and grant announcements for many Federal agencies.
FOUNDATION CENTER

NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) – CRISP DATABASE
This is an extensive database providing information relating to specific projects, research concepts, the latest technologies, and specific principal investigators whose work is funded by NIH.

A wealth of important information is contained at this general address. The Fastlane module is the vehicle for applying for NSF funding. The Grants and Awards module provides access to funding opportunities, proposal preparation, award administration requirements, etc.
NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) – FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
This address provides a good, comprehensive overview as well as specific information relating to what areas of research NSF is interested in funding. Broad program areas are listed along with opportunities for educators, graduate and postdoctoral students, international and small business programs, and featured opportunities, among others.
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FUNDING
Their database includes research and educational funding opportunities from the Federal government, corporations, foundations, and the European union. It also lists opportunities for small businesses. Another module, called FEDIX (Federal Information Exchange) includes grant information for several Federal agencies, including NIH, NASA, and USDA, among others. A third module provides information on minority programs and opportunities, and information on minority centers, facilities, and faculty.
RESEARCH FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES AND ADMINISTRATION (TRAM)
This site provides links to web addresses for major funding agencies, foundations, associations, and other sources of funding. It also contains a list of university departments and sponsored research offices throughout the country. Many agency application forms are available in an interactive format but the acceptability by the agency cannot be guaranteed. Also included are Federal regulations for several agencies, and a research funding search engine.
