190 Course Descriptions

 

ART 190: EC Pinched, Coiled, Slab Ceramics

 This class will explore the techniques of pinch pots, coiled pots and slab construction. Projects can include sculptural and/or functional pieces. Students will have the opportunity to assist in loading and firing the kilns.

ART 190: EC Experimental Photography

This is a hands-on photography class that explores pinhole, Holga, stereoscope, camera obscura and other alternative photography processes of student interest. Students will also explore der Kroon techniques as well. The course will require the purchase of materials by the students.

 BA 190: Travel & Tourism Practicum

Learn the essentials of travel planning, including travel sales and trends, destination geography, air reservations, air fares, ground transportation and hospitality.

 CSIS 190: Computer Literacy

A wide variety of computer skills are required for successful learning in college. This course teaches students how to operate a computer, use email and navigate the Internet, and use word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.

CSIS 190: HTML I

This course covers the basics of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) used to publish information on the World Wide Web. Topics include an introduction to HTML tags such as bold and italic, lists, inline images and hyperlink. The class will also discuss HTML style and how you can publish your own personal pages on the Web. In addition, this class will introduce you to the World Wide Web and search engine strategies.

ED 190: EC All Children Above Average

An opportunity to examine education policy on the national, state and local levels in the context of the current reform movement and the effects of that policy on children, parents, teachers and the social fabric of our nation.

ED 190: EC Project Wild

If you work with kindergarten through grade 12 kids in schools, after school, in camps, scouts or other activities, you will love the activity-filled books that come with this class. This outstanding outdoor education curriculum is designed to help you teach about the environment through hands-on and outdoor activities that are downright fun. Additional work will be required of students taking this course for upper-division credit.

ED 190: ECE Leadership: Team-building

This class will increase participants’ understanding of how to build political good will and public support for increased public investment in early care and education. Speakers will provide information on how to sustain an advocacy agenda and policy options, form relationships with elected and appointed officials and how to develop a communication strategy.

ENGL 190: EC Steam Trains

Without the railroad, Durango would not exist. We’ll study the impact of the railroad on Southwest Colorado in images from fiction, film and biography, in Durango’s train yard and storytelling, in the museums of Silverton, Durango and Animas City, in the technology of steam, turntables and car shops, and in riding the train to Silverton.

GEOL 190: EC Exploring the Jemez Mountains

Learn all about the history, archaeology and geology of this fascinating region. Classroom experiences will give you the background of the area, followed by a weekend camping trip to the mountains to explore the locality firsthand! Dates and logistics for the weekend trip will be arranged by consensus of the class.

GS 190: Exploring the Liberal Arts

This course, designed for students undecided about a major, helps students take steps to realize the possibilities of a liberal arts education. This course addresses the historical role of the liberal arts college, the role it plays in our society and how liberal education helps students develop transferable skills that are valued in the world of work. The course includes an introspective component in which students look at their interests, talents, passions and strengths as well as a research component in which students investigate the knowledge and abilities developed through selected liberal arts disciplines’ programs of study.

GS 190: Freshman Seminar

This course is designed to enhance first-semester students’ engagement within the intellectual work of college.

GS 190: Intro to the Study of Law

This course, designed for students who are exploring an interest in studying law, provides an introduction to the institution of law, the purpose and methods of legal education and the legal profession.

GS 190: Intro to Pre-health Disciplines

This course is designed to assist students in making informed academic and career decisions by exploring a variety of health professions, the academic disciplines on which the professions are based, current issues in the health care professions and the processes necessary to become a health care professional.

GS 190: EC R.A.D. For Women

The Rape Aggression Defense system is a basic self-defense class specifically designed to teach women defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault. The goal is to develop and enhance the options of self-defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked. The course is a hands-on physical course instructed by a certified R.A.D. instructor.

MATH 190: College Algebra Success

This course is intended for students who want extra help with Math 110, College Algebra. It includes a review of basic math skills and overview of general college survival skills with an emphasis on math class skills.

MATH 190: College Mathematics Modules

The course will address the specific topics included in the Standards for Colorado Educators. The course will cover 1) number systems and number sequences, 2) geometry, 3) measurement, 4) statistics and probability, and 5) functions and use of variables. A common theme within each subtopic will be referencing the Colorado Model Content Standards in Mathematics for the improvement of instructions. A second common theme will involve negative attitudes toward math and the anxiety about it felt by many future elementary teachers.

ML 190: Recitation Intermediate French I

Recitation credit hour will be devoted to the exploration of French culture.

ML 190: EC South America: Film

This course will explore Argentinean, Bolivean and Peruvian culture through film. The art of cinematography and an analysis of the artistic qualities of these films will facilitate a greater understanding of the social, cultural and historical contexts of these countries.

ML 190: Conversational Spanish for Beginners I

The beginning Spanish conversation course is for individuals who have little or no experience with the Spanish language. Students will build vocabulary and learn to ask and answer basic questions. Oral communication, understanding and responding, and introduction to present tense verbs will be emphasized in this course.

ML 190: Conversational Spanish for Beginners II

The beginning Spanish conversation course is for individuals who have little or no experience with the Spanish language. Students will build vocabulary and learn to ask and answer basic questions. Oral communication, understanding and responding, and introduction to present tense verbs will be emphasized in this course.

ML 190: Japanese for Beginners I

This course is designed for individuals with little or no experience in Japanese language. Emphasis is on developing basic language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing with introduction to Hiragana and Katakana. Student will learn basic grammatical structures and cultural context in the language.

PHIL 190: EC A Brief History of  Time

Where did the universe come from? Did the universe have a beginning, and if so, what happened before then? What is the nature of time? Stephen Hawking provides an accessible account of modern physics’ answer to these and other cosmological questions. Additional work will be required of students taking this class for upper-division credit.

PHIL 190: EC Inevitable Illusions

Everyone knows that optical illusions trick us because of the way we see. Scientists have discovered that cognitive illusions, a set of biases deeply embedded in the human mind, can also distort the way we think. What exactly are these illusions? Additional work will be required of students taking this course for upper-division credit.

PSYC 190: EC Mandala Explorations

A journey through the psychology, history, art and culture of the Mandala. Additional work will be required of students taking this course for upper-division credit.
