Artist Statement
The landscape is crowded with discordant elements that often contradict and muddy our perceptions and expectations. Our surroundings must thus be experienced selectively. We filter out what is not necessary, ignore what is irrelevant, as the view becomes a collection of instances, fragments, specimens and objects.

Often what is noticed and selected is dependent on the presence of a man-made element.  The curve of a hill or the texture of vegetation is most visible when it is marked, divided or plotted.  Despite very different values and worth assigned to each, nature and human activity are oddly interdependent.  Together, they form fragments floating through our view.

Kevin Bell comes to art from a diverse background. He earned his BA in history from Bowdoin College, studied for a master's degree in environmental studies at Evergreen State College, and has worked as a teacher and small business owner in Alaska among other things. He earned his MFA in painting from University of Oregon and taught art at Portland State University, Oregon College of Art and Craft, and University of Oregon before coming to Fort Lewis.

Kevin is Editor of FATE in Review, a national journal focusing on art pedagogy. His paintings have recently been shown in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Hamburg, Germany, Seoul, Korea, and Vancouver B.C. He is currently represented by Gallery Jones.
