Suggested sequence for Communication Majors.
The Communications option is located in the English Department because we believe that in addition to the skills necessary to work in the industry, a graduate must also have a broader base of knowledge to understand events and people with whom they will come in contact. In fact, several traditional journalism schools across the country are shifting toward this model and away from a strictly skills-based curriculum. A familiarity with history, economics and political science, for example, will help a student understand the context in which current events unfold. This in turn can provide for a deeper, richer, more nuanced piece of work than might otherwise be possible.
Listed below are the requirements one needs to fulfill the English Communications degree. In addition, for those who are relatively certain of their specific area, or "Track," within the Communications discipline, English Communications Faculty have provided guidance in terms of your electives and general education classes. Thus, examine the following Tracks, especially as you plan your courses as a student at FLC.
