Service to the General Public

The music department of Fort Lewis College serves the general public by strengthening the relationship between the Durango Community and the college, by functioning as a cultural center, and by providing a myriad of concerts, recitals and lectures. The faculty participates in outreach programs, acting as musical ambassadors to public schools. The music department specifically serves the general public in the following ways and through the following programs:

Public Performances
Music Department Faculty members:
1.Perform public concerts at Fort Lewis College, the Community Concert Hall and at numerous other public venues.
2.Perform on the Showcase Concert Series, a community series in Farmington, New Mexico.
3.Provide volunteer performances for fund raising events for organizations such as the San Juan Symphony and Music in the Mountains.
4.Perform in the summer with the Music in the Mountains festival.
5.Sing in the Durango Chorale Society.
6.Hold principle performance positions with the San Juan Symphony.
7.Perform with the Animas Music Festival.
8.Perform with local ensembles such as Jeff Solon’s 1940 Big Band and the Four Corners Concert Band.
9.Hold positions in community churches, such as Minister of Music at the Durango Baptist Church, Liturgical Musician at the St. Columba Church, and organist and flutist at St. Mark’s church.
Teaching/Conducting and Lecturing in the Community
Music Department Faculty members:
1.Teach private students of all ages and abilities from the community. Some teachers offer “scholarships” to students with limited financial means.
2.Teach at Katzin Music, a community music school.
3.Teach, accompany and perform for various summer music festivals, such as the summer Conservatory Music in the Mountains, and the International Music Festival.
4.Serve as guest conductors at local schools and for area ensembles.
5.Serve as artistic directors and conductors for the Durango Choral Society, a group consisting of auditioned community members and students.
6.Serve as artistic directors of local music festivals including the Animas Music Festival, a summer festival designed to promote and introduce new music to the public.
Educational/Outreach Programs
1.The music department hosts the Select Band, Honor Choir, Four Corners Piano Competition, Jazz Festival, and Honors Chamber Orchestra. All concerts and master classes are open to the public.
2.FLC Ensembles (flute, brass, mallet, chamber choir, etc.) perform for local schools.
3.In collaboration with the Music in the Mountains festival, the music department invites hundreds of public school children to the Community Concert Hall to hear the music department faculty introduce the instruments through small ensemble performances.
4.Faculty members provide clinics, master-classes and coaching sessions in community public schools.
5.Faculty members collaborate with the Artist in Residence Committee of the Fort Lewis College Foundation to sponsor and promote recitals of well-known performers such as the Eroica Trio and the Oregon Brass Ensemble.
Public Service
Music faculty members:
1.Serve as board members on committees for the San Juan Symphony, the Durango Choral Society, the Animas Music Festival, and the Artist in Residence Program.
2.Have facilitated local curriculum development such as the music program for Southern Ute Head Start.
3.Are active and hold positions in local, regional and national music organizations. (Dr. Mark Walters serves on the Colorado Music Educators Association executive board as chair of the College and University Music Council. Dr. Katherine Tischhauser serves as secretary of ASTA with NSOA.)
