Scholarship Information and Award Criteria

 

Computer Science, Engineering and Math Scholarships (CSEMS)

Fort Lewis College

 

A.      Eligible students:

1.       Existing Fort Lewis College students, transfer students, entering freshmen

2.       Must be a US citizen or permanent resident

3.       Must be enrolled in one of the following majors at Fort Lewis College; computer science, (pre)engineering, engineering-physics, math. Entering freshmen or transfers can apply at any time but must accepted and enrolled prior to receiving any funds.

 

B.      General Criteria

1.       Awardees must show a strong interest in pursuing and completing a degree program in computer science, engineering, or mathematics. Evidence will include:

a.       Completion of a high school curriculum including science and math preparatory classes, participation in summer science and engineering camps, CSEMS related summer work experiences, participation in science and engineering fairs or similar activities.

b.       Continuing college students who have successfully completed CSEMS course work, CSEMS related summer work experiences, or other appropriate activities.

2.       Awardees must demonstrate financial need as defined by the U.S. Department of Education and evaluated by the Fort Lewis College Office of Financial Aid.

3.       Awardees must demonstrate that their previous academic work meets the stated minimum performance.  See specific criteria presented below.

4.       Awardees must be current or accepted full time students at Fort Lewis College.

a.       A full time student must carry a minimum of 12 credits however preference will be given to those

      who carry 15 credits or more.

b.       You must have a declared CSEMS major and be enrolled in the appropriate coursework toward

      completing a CSEMS degree.

 

C.      Specific Criteria

1.       Tier 1 Scholarships – Students who have demonstrated strong academic performance by achieving a cumulative high school or college GPA of 3.0 or higher and meet the general criteria listed above are eligible for CSEMS. Specific application requirements;

a.       Complete an interview with a CSEMS Leadership Team faculty member if you are a current FORT LEWIS COLLEGE student.

b.       Demonstrate professionalism by preparing a one page personal statement and one letters of support from high school or college teachers that will be reviewed by the Leadership Team. These should address your past performance, professional goals, and ability to successfully complete a computer science, engineering or math degree.

c.       Complete CSEMS application form and scholarship contract

2.       Tier 2 Scholarships – Students who have a cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.3 or higher and meet the general criteria listed above are eligible. Specific application requirements;

a.       Complete interview with a CSEMS Leadership Team faculty member if you are a current FORT LEWIS COLLEGE student.

b.       Demonstrate professionalism by preparing a one page personal statement and one letters of support from high school or college teachers that will be reviewed by the Leadership Team. These should address your past performance, professional goals, and ability to successfully complete a computer science, engineering or math degree.

c.       Demonstrate to the selection committee that the student is committed to their education and has/is taking steps to assure their success as a CSEMS student. Evidence of this can take many forms including; personal testimony, enrollment in appropriate preparatory courses, enrollment in tutoring or other student support programs, and self study resulting in successful challenge of a course or placement test.

Notes:

  1. It is expected that students will be able to reduce outside employment workload in order to dedicate that time to their studies and thereby improve achievement including degree completion.
  2. College or high school transcripts are required to demonstrate student GPA and completion of courses.
  3. Although no racial preference is be given in granting scholarships, students from underrepresented minorities are be strongly encouraged to apply.
