Currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) (original accreditation in 2002 by CAAHEP), the Athletic Training Education Program at Fort Lewis College is an option in the Department of Exercise Science in the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. The Athletic Training Education Program prepares students for certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) and employment as a certified athletic trainer.

The athletic training program, as designed, is progressive in nature. Students construct knowledge in the area of athletic training as they progress through the program. The courses have been sequentially integrated with the departmental requirements to provide a soundly structured educational experience. The educational program strives to incorporate the required competencies and proficiencies in both the didactic and clinical experiences of the student.

Specifically the educational program is designed to:

  1. Prepare students who meet the qualifications for certification by the BOC.
  2. Produce highly educated and skilled professionals who specialize in athletic health care.
  3. Prepare students for acceptance into graduate programs in the areas of physical therapy, medicine, and nursing as well as athletic training.
  4. Prepare students for employment in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs and other athletic health care settings.

Upon completion of BIO 233, AT 205, AT 224 and AT 220 students wishing to continue in the Athletic Training option must make a formal application and go through a formal interview. Candidates for admission compete for available slots within the educational program. It is possible for students to meet all admittance requirements and still not be accepted into the program.
