Brian Burke is a clinical psychologist whose principal academic interests include motivational interviewing and college teaching.  Dr. Burke recently published the lead article in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology that featured a meta-analysis of studies evaluating the efficacy of motivational interviewing.  Motivational interviewing is a promising and relatively new treatment for substance abuse and other problem behaviors that combines the humanistic elements of client-centered therapy (Carl Rogers) with more active strategies (e.g., cognitive-behavior therapy) designed to facilitate human change.  Dr. Burke has brought this exciting new treatment to FLC in his Counseling Skills class as well as his work the Wellness Peer Educators.  Further, Dr. Burke has a degree in college teaching and regularly attends teaching conferences on the scholarship of learning and teaching, twice winning the Doug Bernstein Poster Award for innovative teaching ideas, and winning the New Faculty Teaching Award at Fort Lewis College in 2005.  Dr. Burke also advises the Psychology Club and Psi Chi, and works part-time at the FLC student counseling center in order to hone his clinical/counseling skills.  Dr. Burke originally hails from Montreal, Canada, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 2003.  He has been a licensed psychologist in the State of Colorado since November 2004.
