In colleges and
universities, psychology has consistently been one of the most popular
majors. Over a million and a half students enroll in introductory
psychology courses each year. Furthermore, interest in the discipline seems
to be increasing. Experts in human behavior are finding a rising market for
their advice, not just in the traditional areas of mental health, but in
areas of law, industry, medicine, sports, advertising and education. The
number of practicing psychologists in the United States has more than
doubled in 30 years, from 50,000 in 1972 to over 155,000 presently.
What is psychology’s appeal?
There is no doubt that psychology gives the students answers to questions
they have about themselves and others, but its appeal goes beyond this. The
study of the mind and behavior in itself is fascinating, and the study of
psychology takes you into other interesting disciplines. Students of
behavior are exposed to concepts from the field of biology, chemistry,
mathematics, philosophy and logic. In addition, they discover applications
of psychological concepts and principles in fields as diverse as literature
and sociology, business and political science, education and economics.
Indeed, the study of psychology is truly an interdisciplinary endeavor. It
is definitely mind-expanding!
To major in psychology,
you need only have an interest in studying behavior. A background in the
quantitative sciences and an interest in other disciplines is helpful but
not necessary.
