POLICY 11-10 PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY
- Issued: 9-93
- Revised: 8-04
- Approved:

Fort Lewis College acknowledges the right of individuals to assemble peacefully. At such gatherings, the College expects the rights and privileges of all persons to be respected and the health and safety of all persons not to be endangered in any way. Such gatherings must in no way disrupt the normal conduct of College affairs or endanger College property.
Persons planning such assemblies on the College campus must seek approval and coordinate their activities and plans in advance through the Director of the Leadership Center. The College reserves the right to determine the time, place, and manner in which the assembly takes place. The sponsoring individual or group must assume responsibility for compliance with all state and municipal laws and College policies, including the Student Conduct Code and the Colorado statute on riot offenses (C.R.S. ยง 23-5-124). Assistance from the Leadership Center staff is available to help plan such gatherings, and the assistance of College police may be requested to help control traffic or crowds.
Any act by individuals that interferes with the rights of others, disrupts the normal conduct of College affairs, endangers property, and/or endangers the health or safety of self and/or others is grounds for a criminal charge and/or suspension or expulsion from the College. Assemblies are prohibited in any special-use facility (e.g., Chapel, Concert Hall, Gymnasium, Library, laboratories, residence halls and apartments, Student Life Center) at all times, in classrooms during academic hours, or in any instance that disrupts the educational mission of the College. Individuals refusing to vacate premises when directed to do so by a College official are subject to immediate interim suspension from the College and/or arrest under applicable municipal and state laws.
This policy is promulgated in accordance with federal case law and recent Colorado statutes. |
