How can Hazardous Materials Management help you?

The Hazardous Materials Management office is here to assist College employees and students with the safe use of chemical materials.  Specific ways we can help you include:

  • Provide for your workplace or lab a Spill Cleanup Kit containing cleanup supplies for spills up to 2 gallons of liquid.  The kit includes gloves, adsorbents, disposal bags and instructions.

  • Assist with obtaining and interpreting an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for a particular material

  • Advise about the potential hazards of a particular material you may wish to use

  • Assist with designing a safe practice in handling and storing a hazardous material

  • Provide non-emergency spill clean-up assistance.

  • Dispose of any hazardous or potentially hazardous waste material.  Call Ext. 7272 for consultation and to arrange pick-up.

  • Provide custom labels for containers of hazardous materials

  • Consult about bothersome odors, unidentified dusts, worrisome leaks, etc.

  • Consult about state and federal regulations and sources of regulatory information

The Hazardous Materials Office (Chemistry Hall 244) has a number of references for safety and regulatory data on materials, as well as catalogs for safety equipment, storage containers, labels and signs.

If you need assistance, call Jim Mills, Hazardous Materials Manager, at 7272 and leave a message with a phone number.  Dr. Mills checks voicemail once every 24 hours and will respond by phone.  He is on campus part-time and available for on-site consultations by appointment.  His office is Chemistry Hall 244.
