| Need an MSDS?
EMERGENCY: If you need emergency help for personal injury or a chemical spill which threatens personal safety, CALL 9-911 for emergency response by FLC Public Safety officers. They will activate the call for emergency medical or Haz Mat help from Durango Fire and Rescue as appropriate.
Mercy Medical Emergency Room and Campus Health Center personnel have direct access to MSDS information.
CUSTODIAL CHEMICALS:
Click here to obtain an MSDS for a custodial chemical used by Physical Plant Services or Housing. Reviews of the hazard levels for these custodial chemicals are also located at this site.
LABORATORY AND SHOP CHEMICALS: To find an MSDS for a laboratory or shop chemical, try one of the searchable public service sites that house an MSDS library. Click on one of the following links:
Search by manufacturer or brand, product name, chemical name or CAS number. Print for a hard copy.
These are searchable public service sites housed on several servers for reliable 24/7 access. Manufacturers are invited to submit their MSDSs for posting to these sites to meet the OSHA requirement for providing a free MSDS to customers. These sites are intended to be the primary access to MSDS information when College employees wish to know the exposure hazards of chemicals in the workplace.
If you cannot find the desired MSDS in one of these libraries, try a Google search with the chemical's information (and include MSDS). This will usually lead directly to an MSDS.
ART STUDIO CHEMICALS: An excellent source for the MSDSs of a wide range of commercial artist products is furnished by the searchable Rhode Island School of Design MSDS site. Click here. Useful pages include the RISD and Metcalf Stores, Ceramics and Painting. If you cannot find the desired MSDS on the RISD site, try a Google search with the chemical's information (and include MSDS). This will usually lead directly to an MSDS.
CANNOT FIND THE MSDS YOU NEED? Call Jim Mills, Hazardous Materials Manager, at 247-7272 and leave a message with a phone number, or email him at mills_j@fortlewis.edu.
HOW TO USE AN MSDS: A Material Safety Data Sheet can be used for learning: 1. the hazards of being exposed to a certain chemical; 2. how to handle and store a hazardous chemical; and 3. first aid and medical measures.
For most people, the best way to learn how to use an MSDS is simply to spend some time reading one. You might wish to try the MSDS for mineral spirits marketed by Kleen-Strip. For most users, the most important sections of the MSDS are
Sect. 2 Hazards Identification
Sect. 3 First Aid Measures
Sect. 6 Accidental Release Measures
Sect. 7 Handling and Storage
Sect. 8 Personal Protection
University of Missouri and the United Scenic Artists Local 829 sites provide sample SDSs with explanations.
