| Universal Wastes
The State of Colorado has identified as Universal Wastes certain hazardous wastes which are commonly produced both in homes and in non-residential sources such as farms, businesses, governmental agencies and schools. Universal Wastes are particularly important threats to public landfills and the environment largely due to the immense quantities being generated.
At Fort Lewis College, universal wastes generated by college staff in the course of college operations are managed as follows:
Batteries: Lead-storage batteries are collected by Equipment Maintenance at the Auto Shop. This includes automotive batteries and certain communications batteries. Ni/Cd, Ni metal hydride and Li ion batteries are collected in the PPS yard for recycling. Alkaline batteries are not considered hazardous and are discarded to landfill.
Aerosol cans: Aerosol cans are collected in the PPS yard for disposal in the normal hazardous waste stream by Hazardous Materials Management. Call 7272 for pickup.
Fluorescent lamps: Exhausted fluorescent lamps are collected by the Electrical Systems staff and crushed for commercial mercury recovery and recycling in compliance with Part 273.13 of Colorado Hazardous Waste Regulations.
Electronic wastes (circuit boards, computers, monitors): The Computer Center handles the disposal of college-owned computer equipment. Send an email to helpline@fortlewis.edu or call the Helpline (7444). (Computers released from duty are scrubbed of information and collected in a central depository near Central Stores in the PPS area, along with discarded general electronics equipment.) All other college electronic equipment ready for disposal should be reported to Purchasing (7546).
Mercury and devices containing mercury: All waste liquid mercury and devices containing liquid mercury are handled in the normal hazardous waste stream by Hazardous Materials Management. Call 7272 for pickup.
Agricultural pesticides: All pesticides from Grounds Maintenance and the Biology Department are handled in the normal hazardous waste stream by Hazardous Materials Management. Call 7272 for pickup. |
