What wastes are hazardous?

Read the label.  Look for the following:

  • Flammable liquids:  mineral spirits, lacquer thinner (acetone), fuels, oil-based paints, organic solvents  --  If it smells like gasoline or oil-based paint, assume it is hazardous waste.
  • Materials that are highly acidic or basic (caustic)
  • Any material emitting a gas (bubbling, evaporating rapidly, strong odor)
  • Anything containing lead, chromium, mercury, barium, silver, cadmium, arsenic or selenium
  • Anything containing cyanide, sulfide or fluoride
  • Pesticides of any sort
  • Anything described as a possible carcinogen
  • Anything listed with an explosive or reactive danger
  • Anything whose label says not to discard into the trash, or lists any specific danger or hazard
  • Any unidentified material that seems out of context or of mysterious nature

Materials Purchased by the College:
The disposal of hazardous wastes generated from materials purchased by the College is regulated by federal and state laws, and is the responsibility of the College's Hazardous Materials Management office.  It is illegal for College staff to allow the improper disposal of these hazardous wastes.
