Note: If you connect to e-mail using the e-mail link from the Fort Lewis College home page, you are not using either POP or IMAP, so these directions do not apply to you. You do not need to make any changes, but we recommend that you begin using the new Outlook Web Access interface at https://wwwmail.fortlewis.edu

The e-mail server requires secure (SSL) communications and requires authentication (but see Macintosh exception below). You will need to configure your e-mail client program to support SSL A sample configuration using Outlook Express on a PC would be as follows:
- Click the Tools menu and select 'Accounts'
- Click the Mail tab at the top of the window
- Click on your account, then click the 'Properties' button
- Click the Servers tab at the top of the window
- Click the checkbox in front of "My server requires authentication"
Updated 3/23/2004: Macintosh users of Entourage should not check the box to require authentication. Entourage cannot be used to send mail from off-campus to another off-campus address unless you

- connect through the Fort Lewis College VPN or
- set your Outgoing mail server (SMTP) to a different server (for instance, if you have a broadband connection you may be able to use your ISP's SMTP server to send mail)
- Click the Advanced tab at the top of the window
- Updated 3/18/2004: Under the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" and "Incoming mail (IMAP)" lines, click the checkbox in front of "This server requires a secure connection(SSL)".
If you use IMAP, the server port should change from 143 to 993.
If you use POP, the server port should change from 110 to 995.
The SMTP server port (25) should not change.
- Click the OK button
Other e-mail client programs should have similar settings available.
