MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway guards the perimeter of the enterprise against the costly, dangerous and growing threats to corporate email. Threats such as spam, phishing and fraud, directory harvest attacks, virus attacks, and email that violates corporate policies, are stopped before they infiltrate corporate email servers and employee inboxes.

Email Threats Are Significant and Growing
Spam now accounts for more than half of all email and an increasing amount of it carries threats to business security and continuity. In 2003, spam alone cost businesses an estimated $20 billion in increased personnel and infrastructure. Other costly and dangerous threats are attacks to email systems and infrastructure, such as Directory Harvest Attacks, Dictionary Attacks and Denial of Service Attacks. These attacks are real, and place a significant burden on email infrastructure. They also put proprietary company information at risk, and open the door for subsequent spam that is more targeted, deceptive, and dangerous.

Unwanted Email Threatens Business Communication
Overall, unwanted email threatens business communication, dilutes employee productivity, and increases infrastructure costs. It also increases corporate liability and opens new security vulnerabilities.

What is Spam?
Spam is often defined as unsolicited commercial email, but this does not capture it. Spam can be non-commercial, such as chain letters and political mailings. Likewise, unsolicited commercial email can be critical to business – a press release, a business development inquiry. We define Spam as unwanted email. Spam is simply email the particular recipient does not want to receive.

What is a Directory Harvest Attack (DHA)?
A Directory Harvest Attack is an attempt by a malicious person to harvest the email addresses of employees in your company. This is accomplished by sending SMTP messages to your server addressed to any name combination imaginable, and collecting the response information back from the server. Those addresses that are found to be valid are then packaged and sold.

What is a Dictionary Attack?
A Dictionary Attack is an attempt by a spammer to get a spam message to as many people in your organization as possible. The spammer accomplishes this by sending the message to every name combination imaginable at your domain. The spam email gets through to the name “guesses” that are valid.

What is a Denial of Service Attack (DoS)?
A Denial of Service Attack is an attempt by a malicious person or group to bring down your email infrastructure. This is accomplished by sending an enormous volume of malicious email traffic into your organization at a coordinated time.

Intelligent Attack Protection
MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway provides sophisticated protection from the variety of attacks that threaten corporate email. These attacks can cost companies billions of dollars a year in infrastructure and business productivity costs, and can debilitate even the largest email systems. With MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway, malicious traffic is detected and deleted at the perimeter so your infrastructure and resources remain free for processing valid email and conducting business.

Prevent Directory Harvest Attacks
Directory Harvest Attacks put highly proprietary company information at risk and result in a higher volume of spam as well as spam that is more targeted, deceptive, and dangerous. These attacks can put a tremendous load on email systems. On average, 30% of all enterprise email infrastructure is hijacked at any given point in time by spammers trying to steal email addresses from corporate directories. Left unchecked, your systems can inadvertently give away information that will increase the malicious traffic in the future - malicious traffic that can delay your good email and slow down your business productivity.

MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway protects against Directory Harvest Attacks. You can configure the product to give spammers no information about the validity of an email address, which effectively shuts down their attacks. With MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway, email analysis and filtering takes place at the perimeter of your organization, so attacks are deflected before they infiltrate your infrastructure.

Stop Dictionary Attacks at the Perimeter
Dictionary Attacks result in costly performance degradation. During a Dictionary Attack, a tremendous load of email traffic is received with every possible letter combination used to guess the email addresses in your company. Receiving and processing all these messages drains system resources and can delay your good email.

MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway can be configured to take a number of different actions on emails addressed to invalid email addresses. You have the option to automatically delete them, therefore preventing invalid traffic from burdening your infrastructure.

Protect Against Denial of Service Attacks
MailFrontier provides real-time protection against Denial of Service (DoS) Attacks that target both individuals and companies. Once a DoS message is marked as Junk, the MailFrontier Enterprise Gateway will block any further DoS messages. This stops the Denial of Service Attack in real-time and prevents the malicious traffic from burdening your people and systems.
