The campus’ unique setting on the bluff overlooking historic the City of Durango provides one of the nation’s most dramatic settings in higher education.  This does however come with a price.  The setting isolates the campus from the community.

The campus has beautiful views in all directions, due to its topography.

The downtown historic district Durango lies directly to the west, and approximately 250’-300’ below campus.

The 8^th Avenue access to campus, quickly traverses the 250’-300’ grade with the use of tight switchbacks.  The northeastern campus entry at College Drive ascends the bluff with a more gradual approach, through the valley located between campus and Raidar Ridge to the east.

Fort Lewis College appears to be a relatively flat campus once you experience the elevation change getting to campus.  Although it appears relatively level, the central core has 20’ to 30’ of elevation change.

Accessibility issues arise continuously due to the campus topography.  The main pedestrian access into the academic zone is relatively steep and access from parking is difficult in many areas.
