The Custodial Department, an essential campus entity of Physical Plant Services (PPS), and an often underappreciated force, addresses sanitary concerns in all buildings on campus with the exception of apartments, dorms, the College Union Building (CUB) and the Student Life Center. On a daily basis, custodial services are provided for almost 600,000 square feet of academic, administrative and athletic buildings.
To put in perspective the expanse of this venue versus the number of employees available to put to hand their skills, 10 custodial workers cover campus needs on the day shift and 10 employees cover evenings.
Combined, 20 women and men total clean toilets and sinks, sweep and damp mop tiled and other hard surfaced floors, remove trash, clean classroom blackboards/erasures and re-supply the chalk, dust, disinfect and throughout the day answer calls for product re-supplies in restrooms, spot/shampoo/extract carpet and upholstery spills, strip/refinish and wax tiled floors, provide emergency cleanup due to spills and floods. The former duties become daily routine, however frequently unsavory demands related to vandalism and carelessness occur.
According to a 2003 equipment inventory on the Fort Lewis College campus there are 678 toilets, 133 urinals, 297 sinks (kitchen, lab), 824 lavatories (restrooms), 187 tub and shower combination, 261 single showers, 199 garbage disposals, 103 drinking fountains (non refrigerated), and 54 mop sinks.
