Parking and Traffic Regulations

PARKING PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL VEHICLES ON CAMPUS, FROM SEPTEMBER - APRIL
The College expects strict compliance with the state, city, county and campus traffic rules and regulations from all students, faculty, staff and visitors.  The registered owner of the vehicle can be held responsible for parking fines even if they are not driving the vehicle.  Visitor spaces are for visitors' vehicles only - not for students, faculty or staff.  These traffic rules and regulations are issued under authority of Colorado Revised Statutes 23-5-107.

  • Students, Faculty, and staff may purchase permits at the Cashier's Office. Students may also purchase permits at Fort Lewis College Police & Parking Department in Aspen Hall, or the Information Desk or Skycard Office in the College Union Building.
  • Faculty and staff will receive notices in August with instructions for payroll deduction. This option is available only for permits purchased before September 10th, 2008. After that date, faculty and staff must purchase permits at the Cashier's Office.

PARKING PERMIT INFORMATION

  • All vehicles must have permits on them through the fall and winter terms, from September 2008 through April 2009.
  • Permits may be transfered from car to car, but may not be transferred or sold from person to person.
  • Permits must be displayed in lower left- or right-hand corner of windshield, fully visible.
  • Purchase a permit and display it properly to avoid a $25.00 fine for No Permit, or a $10.00 fine for Improper Display.
  • If one has multiple vehicles, each permit is full price. Replacements for lost or stolen decals are available through Police & Parking Services. Call 247-7491 for more information.
  • Permits may be purchased in advance of the deadlines, and are available throughout the year.
  • Plan on purchasing a permit prior to deadlines, or before bringing the vehicle to campus.

The College is not responsible for lost or stolen decals; however, a prompt report to Fort Lewis College Police may result in the recovery and return of property.

RULES OF THE ROAD

The responsibility for enforcing traffic and parking regulations rests with the Fort Lewis College Police Department.

  • Fort Lewis College employs State Police Officers. They are responsible for monitoring traffic on campus, along with their other duties.
  • This department works in cooperation with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office and the Durango Police Department. Under emergency conditions, the Colorado State Patrol may also be involved in law enforcement on campus.
  • All roadways on campus are considered city roadways, and state, city, county, and campus regulations regarding driving and parking apply. Be advised that Fort Lewis College police officers have the authority to issue tickets for moving violations which will result in a summons to the Durango Municipal city court or La Plata County court. Assessment of a fine and/or loss of parking/driving privileges on campus may result from cases of serious or repeated violations.
  • The speed limit on campus is 25mph, unless otherwise indicated.

UNAUTHORIZED PARKING/DRIVING AREAS

  • Parking for permit holders is on a "first-come, first-served" basis, in designated spaces only.
  • Watch for signs designating No-Parking, Service Vehicle, or other types or reserved spaces. Hash marks on the asphalt designate No Parking zones.
  • Parking is not allowed in these areas, whether posted "No Parking" or not. Vehicles parking illegally in these spaces may be issued a citation, immobilized or towed away at the owner's expense, without notice.
  • When parking temporarily to load/unload, notify Fort Lewis College Police & Parking Services at 247-7491 or 247-7123.
  • When leaving a vehicle in an unauthorized space due to an unavoidable emergency, contact Police & Parking Services.
  • No driving or parking on any pedestrian walkway except for maintenance or emergency vehicles.
