10 Things New Students Should Know About Computing Resources at Fort Lewis College

  1. You have an FLC network account. When you register for classes you are automatically assigned an account. Your username is your first initial followed by your second initial followed by the first 9 letters of your last name. Example: Mary Lucy Cartwright’s username would be mlcartwrigh. When you register your password is randomly generated and mailed or given to you. The first time you log in to any computer in our campus computing labs you will be prompted to change your password. Your password must contain, at least one uppercase letter, at least one lowercase letter, and at least one numeral. To make subsequent changes to your password, log on to a campus computer and press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then choose Change Password.
  2. You have email. Fort Lewis College email is the official channel for communications at our College. This means that you are responsible for reading all information the college distributes to you through this system. You should check this account at least weekly. Your email account address is username@fortlewis.edu. You can access this account both on and off campus. To retrieve email through the Internet go to http://wwwmail2.fortlewis.edu.
  3. You have an Internet connection. From off-campus, you can dial into the network (247-7299) to browse the Internet or check your email. (See http://resnet.fortlewis.edu for how to’s based on your operating system.) If you live in a residence hall on campus you have a DIRECT Ethernet connection. Dial-up access is not allowed from the residence halls. Our new access control software, Bradford, will check to make sure you have all the anti-virus, patches, and updates you need before allowing access.
  4. You have a 24-hour computing facility. It is located in the basement of Reed Library. For more information on computer lab locations on campus see http://fortlewis.edu/administrative_services/academic_labs/default.asp
  5. You have 50MB of storage space on the FLC server. When you log on to any of the computers in the lab, your personal storage space is automatically mapped to the M: drive. You can access this space both on and off campus and we strongly recommend that you use it. For information on how to do this, navigate to http://fortlewis.edu/administrative_services/resnet/mdrive.asp.
  6. You have a web host. First create a WWW folder on your M: drive by filling out a request form at http://student.fortlewis.edu/mywebpage. You can find a complete tutorial on how to get started at http://fortlewis.edu/administrative_services/it/student/webdev.asp. After creating an index.html page to serve as your homepage within your WWW directory your page will be listed at http://student.fortlewis.edu. The address of your web site will be http://student.fortlewis.edu/username.
  7. You have help. Most of the major labs on campus are staffed with lab assistants. (You can apply for a position as a lab assistant by calling 247-7119.) You can also get assistance by calling the Academic Computing Lab office at 247-7022 or by sending an email to labline@fortlewis.edu.
  8. You have access to WebOPUS. With WebOPUS, you can view your transcripts, register for classes, view your schedule and even make payments on your student account. Go to http://webopus.fortlewis.edu and choose the Login to Secure Area icon. Your WebOPUS user ID is your student ID number. Your WebOPUS user ID is NOT your computer network username! Do not confuse your WebOPUS user ID with your computer network username! Your WebOPUS PIN was listed on the Computer Registration and Records Account document that was either mailed or given to you when you registered.
  9. If you live in a residence hall, you have cable TV and voicemail For a current list of available channels, check the ResNet website at http://resnet.fortlewis.edu. Here you will also find instructions on setting up and using your voice mail.
  10. You have a print quota that is included with your student tech fee. Each student receives a $4.00 credit on their account when they register. Printing in the computer labs costs 5 cents per black and white page (double-sided prints are 10 cents), 50 cents per color page, and $1.00 per plot. Students may purchase quota from the value station in Reed Library with cash or coin only or online with a credit card in any computer lab on campus.
