This document is the ONLY SUPPORT provided by Fort Lewis College with regard to Dial-Up.
Requirements:
· Macintosh computer
· OS 8.0/8.1 installed on Macintosh
· 14,400 or faster modem (installed as per manufacturer)
· Information used to make a PPP connection
· Your FLC username and password
· Local access telephone number: 247-7299 (on campus 7299)
Step 1: Verify that all the Necessary Control Panels are Installed
From the Apple menu select the Control Panels option. Here you will find a list of all the currently installed Control Panels. In this list you should find the AppleTalk, PPP, and the TCI/IP Control Panels. These Control Panels should be pre-installed from the factory. If they are missing from your system follow the instructions provided by Apple for installing various Control Panels to add them. There will probably also be a Modem Control Panel. Follow the instructions provided in your modem manual to be sure it is installed, configured, and operating properly.
Step 2: Configure the AppleTalk Control Panel
From the Apple menu select the Control Panels option. Locate the AppleTalk Control Panel and select it. A Connect via: option is presented, the desired choice is Modem Port. If Modem Port is not displayed in the Connect via: window, point to the arrow at the right of this window. You will see other choices for connection, find Modem Port and select it.
Close the AppleTalk Control Panel.
Step 3: Configure the TCP/IP Control Panel
From the Apple menu select the Control Panels option. Locate the TCP/IP Control Panel and select it. The settings method for this Control Panel are similar to the AppleTalk Control Panel. Here again you will find a Connect via: option, the desired choice is PPP. If PPP is not displayed in the Connect via: window, point to the arrow at the right of this window. You will see other choices for a TCP/IP connection, find PPP and select it.
In the Setup portion of the TCP/IP Control Panel there is a Configure: option. Using the same method described above select the desired setting of Using PPP Server. The options labeled IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router Address are not modifiable and will be supplied by the server as described.
Close the TCP/IP Control Panel.
STEP 4: CONFIGURING THE PPP CONTROL PANEL
The PPP Control Panel is the application type interface used to make a PPP connection via a modem. This is where the dialing, login and disconnection (along with other functions) take place. This Control Panel is where you are identified as a unique user on the FLC systems.
From the Apple menu select the Control Panels option. Locate the PPP Control Panel and select it. In the section labeled Connection you need to enter your personal user information. First be sure that you have the Registered User button selected. In the Name: window enter your FLC username. In the Password: window enter your FLC password (dots appear to prevent others from seeing your password). Check the Save password box. In the Number: window enter the FLC modem telephone number, 2477299 (7299 on campus).
Click the Options… button near the bottom of the PPP Control Panel.
Note the three tabs near the top of the Options window, they are labeled Redialing, Connection, and Protocol. Select the one labeled Protocol by clicking on the tab labeled as such. Check all three check boxes; Allow error correction and compression in modem, Use TCP header compression, and Connect to a command-line host:. The last item, Connect to a command-line host, has two other related options listed; Use terminal window and Use connect script:. The Redialing and Connection tabs contain options that you might find useful. They are not referenced in these instructions because the options they offer are not necessary to make a working PPP connection.
Ensure that “Allow error compression” and “Use TCP Header Compression” are checked.
STEP 5: MAKE A DIAL UP CONNECTION
At this point you are ready to make a dial-up connection. Click the Connect button in the lower right corner of the PPP Control Panel window. Your modem will begin the dial-up process, you should hear your modem dialing. After the modem connection has been established a terminal window appears, it is labeled PPP Terminal. In the terminal window a modem dialog appears with the last item displayed being a prompt for your username. Until you assign a connection script and select the Use connect script setting in the PPP Control Panel’s Options… window, you will see a similar dialog each time you click the Connect button.
You can now use your favorite TCP/IP based application such as one of the popular web browsers, Netscape or Internet Explorer.
Remember to disconnect when you are done using the TCP/IP based applications. Until you disconnect your telephone line will remain busy for friends and family trying to call you. To disconnect select the PPP Control Panel and click on the Disconnect button in the lower right corner of the PPP window.
