1.Boot up the computer:
Turn on your computer, and let it boot to the Mac Finder screen, where the desktop shows.
2.Go to the AppleTalk Control Panel:
Now, click on the apple in the upper left hand corner. This will open a list, which will drop down from the top of the screen. Point at the “Control Panels” item. This will open another list of items. You do not need to click on the “Control Panels” item to make it open. In the “Control Panels” list, choose the option labeled “AppleTalk” by clicking on it once with the mouse.
3.Set the adapter settings to Ethernet:
In the next window that opens, there should be only one setting to change, which is labeled “Connect via.” It may be set to something already, but click the small downward pointing triangle at the right hand side of the option, and select “Ethernet.” If your card is not a separate card which was put in your computer, but instead is already part of the machine . . . the box may read “Ethernet – built in” instead of “Ethernet.”
Now click the small box in the upper left hand corner of the window with the “AppleTalk” settings in it to close the window. The computer will tell you that you have changed your AppleTalk settings and will ask you if you wish to “Save” “Don’t Save” or “Cancel.” Choose “Save” to keep the settings.
4.Go to the TCP/IP Control Panel:
Now, click again on the apple in the upper left hand corner. This will open a list, which will drop down from the top of the screen. Point at the “Control Panels” item. This will open another list of items. You do not need to click on the “Control Panels” item to make it open. In the “Control Panels” list, choose the option labeled “TCP/IP” by clicking on it once with the mouse.
5.Set the TCP/IP Settings for DHCP:
In the “TCP/IP” control panel there are two options to choose from. The first is “Connect via” just like in the “AppleTalk” window. As with AppleTalk, set the “connect via” option to “Ethernet” or “Ethernet – built in” whichever you have in the list. The second option is labeled “Configure” and should be set to “Using DHCP Server.” If it is not set to this, just choose it from the list.
If you are using an operating system such as OS 8.5 or higher, your computer will also have a box on the TCP/IP window which is labeled “DHCP Client ID” which will appear after you choose “Using DHCP Server” for the configure option. If you have this box, please enter your username in it. Your username is the same as your email address, but without the @fortlewis.edu part. It is formed by taking the first letter of your first name, the first letter of your middle name and up to nine letters of your last name and making them one word. Thus, if your name were John Jane Doe your username would be JJDOE. If your last name is long, such as “Dillingham” which is ten letters, the system will drop any letters after the ninth one. Thus, your username would still have your first and middle initial, but your last name would end up as “DILLINGHA” as in “JJDILLINGHA.”
Now, click the little box in the upper left hand corner of this window to close it.
6.Re-Boot the computer
To get your computer working, you should now re-boot it. Click once on the main Finder screen, or where the desktop displays. This should give you an option at the top of the screen called “Special.” Click on “Special” to get a list of options, and choose the option labeled “Restart.” Your computer will now restart automatically.
