To get your NT computer on the network, you will need to speak with the ResNet Coordinator, Dale Robinson. Visit the Computer Lab Coordinator office in Room 36, EBH.

2.Boot up the PC.

Turn on your computer, and let it boot to the Windows NT desktop, this is the screen where the word “START” is displayed in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.

3.Open the Network Control Panel

Click on the START button, and point to the “SETTINGS” option in the list that appears.  This will cause another list to open that contains the items “Control Panel” “Printers” and “Taskbar…”

Under “SETTINGS” click on the “CONTROL PANEL” option.

In the window that opens, find and double-click on the Control Panel icon labeled “Network.”

You should now be looking at the “Network” window or the “Network Control Panel” which will look like the picture at left.

Click the “Change” option and the computer will display the following window:

In this window, the computer name field needs to contain your username.  “Member of” should have “domain” checked and the domain entry should be FORTLEWIS.  If the computer prompts you to “Create a computer account in the domain” tell it not to.  The creation of a computer account must be done by the ResNet office, see step one.
Next, select the “Protocols” tab.  The entries should be only as follows:

Select TCP/IP and choose properties.  The three tabs which are important are “IP Address” “DNS” and “WINS Address”

The settings for these boxes are shown above:

    • IP Address should be set to “Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server.”
    • DNS should only have your username in the “Host Name” box and all other boxes should be blank.
    • WINS Address should only have “Enable LMHOSTS Lookup” checked and all other boxes should be blank.

Click OK to close the Network Control Panel and allow the computer to reboot.
