Choosing and Contacting Advisors

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHO MY ADVISOR IS?

  • Go to theFort Portal and login to your account.
  • If you do not know your username and password, go to http://www.fortlewis.edu/it/password. If you still can't figure it out, bring photo identification to the FLC Registrar's Office (160 Miller Student Center).
  • Select WebOPUS from the lefthand bar.
  • Once inside WebOPUS, select “Student Services and Financial Aid.”
  • Select “Student Records.”
  • Select “Advising Information.” Your faculty advisor’s name, office location, and phone number will be shown.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY ADVISOR?

Note: Before making an appointment, review our tips for preparing for and conducting appointments with advisors.

  1. Locate your advisor’s office location, telephone number, and/or email. Your WebOPUS “Advising Information” page has this information (see above) or you can look up the information in the on-line searchable college directory.
  2. You can stop by your advisor’s office during office hours. Most faculty post their schedules including office hours on their office doors.
  3. You can telephone or email your advisor. If you do this, make sure you identify yourself as an advisee who wants to make an appointment.
  4. During official Advising Weeks, many faculty post sign-up lists on their office doors for you to schedule an appointment. Some faculty conduct group advising sessions or telephone or email advising. Talk to your advisor about his/her preferences.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY ADVISOR?

  • Obtain a “Change of Advisor” form and complete all the student information parts. The forms are available at the Registrar's Office (160 Miller Student Center) or online.
  • Decide who you want to be your new advisor. Most faculty who have full-time appointments are available to advise. If you aren’t sure who might be available in your area of interest, the Academic Advising Center (140 Miller Student Center) and/or a Department Chairperson can make suggestions.
  • Arrange an appointment with the person you want to ask to be your advisor. At the appointment, explain your interests in switching advisors. If the faculty member is willing to become your advisor, have him/her sign the “Change of Advisor” form.
  • Bring the completed form to the Registrar's Office. Once the Registrar's Office has officially changed your advisor, your electronic records (transcript, placement information, academic standing, course schedule, etc) will become available to that person.
