Preparing for Appointments

THINGS TO DO PRIOR TO YOUR ADVISING APPOINTMENT:

Don’t procrastinate!

Make an appointment with your advisor as early during Advising Weeks as possible.
AltPINs are only given out once you and your advisor have discussed your plans.
Don’t assume you can receive your AltPIN without an advising appointment.

  1. Obtain a copy of your current transcript. (Available from WebOPUS or the Registrar's Office)
  2. Check your midterm grades in WebOPUS and print them out to bring with you.
  3. Fill out the following forms with updated information (use the same Degree Planning and Degree Tracking Worksheets from semester to semester if you can): Advising Appointment Form, Degree Planning Worksheet, Degree Tracking Worksheet
  4. Analyze your completed courses with respect to General Education requirements and your Major requirements.
  5. Confirm that you’ve met (or have a plan for meeting) any Colorado Basic Skills remedial requirements (Math, Reading, Writing). You can see your status in the “Advising Information” page in the WebOPUS Student Records menu.
  6. Plan courses for next semester and consider how each proposed course moves you ahead towards graduation in terms of General Studies, Major Requirements, and Free Electives. The course schedule is available on the Web via the Registrar's Office pages, or you can access it via your WebOPUS account: Student Services / Registration / Select Term / Class Search
  7. Have numerous alternative classes in mind in case your first choices are full.

You also need to:

  • Have an explicit plan for getting assistance in any courses for which your midterm grades are poor.
  • Clear any Holds that would prevent registration. (Check WebOPUS)
  • Know your WebOPUS ID and PIN. (Available from Registrar's Office in Miller Student Center with a photo ID)
  • Know your FLC Computer network ID and Password. (These are needed to use the campus computers to access WebOPUS. They are available from the Lab Coordinators in the basement of EBH.)
  • Know your priority days for registration. These are posted at the Registrar's Office.

THINGS TO DO DURING YOUR ADVISING APPOINTMENT:

  • If you don’t already know your advisor, introduce yourself, and tell your advisor a little bit about you: Where are you from? Is this your first term at FLC? What other colleges have you attended? What are your academic interests?...
  • Take charge of the appointment. Come prepared and have specific questions you want to discuss. You advisor assumes that you have taken responsibility for knowing what coursework you have completed and which graduation requirements you still need to complete.
