More than 75 Fort Lewis College alumni, boosters and friends gathered in Golden on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 for a tailgate party before the FLC vs. Colorado Mines football game. Attendees celebrated the 60th anniversary of FLC's 1949 football team that advanced to the Texas Junior Rose Bowl — the first bowl appearance (and one of just two) in school history.
Babies were the theme of the day, though, as nearly 20 tykes showed up, including children of alumni David & Kendi Bliesmer, Sean Horan, Chrissy & Todd Jaworsky, Brandon & Molly Morris, Hillary Niebauer, Keith Ray, Chrystal & Phil Schmitten, Jeff Stegeman and Laura & Stentz Whitaker played for hours in a Golden city park and behind the east endzone at Brooks Field.
Lunch included sandwiches, chips, potato and pasta salads, cole slaw and cookies. The event was sponsored by the Alumni Association and Skyhawk Booster Club.
While the game was close at halftime (Mines led 20-10), the host Orediggers pulled away in the second half half for a 51-10 win.
Special thanks to alumni Brien Smith (1992), Steve Miller (1991) and Director of Athletics Kelly Higgins, who drove up from Colorado Springs and Durango to help Director of Alumni Relations Chris Aaland with the event.
