    Professional Career: Jim retired in 1999 as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Brouillard Communications, which he co-founded. Brouillard is a division of J. Walter Thompson Company, of which he was a Director, and specialized in using advertising and public relations to build reputations for clients such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citibank, United Technologies, Goodyear, RCA and the American Gas Association. He previously was Vice President-Public Affairs for Western Union Corporation, with responsibility for public relations, investor relations, government relations, advertising, sales promotion and employee communications.

    Ali Sabeti
    Professional Title:  World Bank Executive

    Ali Sabeti worked 14 years in the transportation industry, seven years of which he studied for and acquired a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and MBA at Illinois University.

    He joined the World Bank in 1975 and worked on developing countries around the globe. Ali retired from the World Bank as senior adviser for infrastructure, energy and industry in 1996.

    Since retirement Ali has been an independent advisor to governments and corporations. He moved to Durango in 1998 and has been an adviser and ex-officio board member of the La Plata Economic Development Action Partnership (LEAD). Ali has lectured on international economics and finance.

    Ronald R. Fogleman
    General, United States Air Force (Retired)

    Professional Career: General Ron Fogleman retired from the USAF on 1 September 1997 after thirty-four years of active commissioned service. On his final tour of duty General Fogleman served as the 15th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. Prior to that he was Commander in Chief of the U.S. Transportation Command (CINCTRANS). As chief, he served as the senior uniformed officer responsible for the organization, training and equipage of 750,000 active duty, guard, reserve and civilian forces serving in the United States and overseas. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he served as a military advisor to the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council and the President.

    General Fogleman is currently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Durango Aerospace Incorporated, an international aviation, consulting firm with a client list that includes The Boeing Company, FMC, Northrop Grumman, and RSL Electronics. Additionally, he serves on the board of directors for AAR, EAST Inc., International Airline Support Group, ICN Pharmaceuticals, Mesa Air Group, MITRE Corporation, North American Airlines, Rolls-Royce North America, Thales-Raytheon Systems, and World Airways. He is a member of the National Defense Policy Board, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Advisory Council, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Advisory Board, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Fort Lewis College Foundation, the Falcon Foundation, the Air Force Association, and the Order of Daedalians.

    In addition, he devotes considerable time to national security and community affairs. Since retiring from the Air Force he has chaired an Air Force Laboratory study on directed energy weapons, served on the NASA Mars Program Independent Assessment Team, and the congressionally directed Commission to Assess United States National Security Space Management and Organization. He is currently chairing a National Research Council Committee on Aeronautics Research and Technology for Vision 2050: An Integrated Transportation System.

    General Fogleman has an extensive background in fighter and mobility aircraft, having flown over 6,800 total hours. His fighter experience included operational tours in the F-100, F-4, F-15, F-16 and A-10. He served two tours in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, flying 315 combat missions and logging 806 hours of combat fighter time. His airlift and tanker experience include the C-5, C-17, C-21, C-130, C-141, KC-10 and KC-135. He flew these mobility aircraft in support of humanitarian and contingency operations while serving as CINCTRANS and Commander of the Air Mobility Command. Other senior command positions include: Deputy Commander in Chief, U.S. Forces, Korea; Commander 7th Air Force and Commander Air Component Command of the US/ROK Combined Forces Command; Commander 836th Air Division; and Commander of the 56th FTW.

    General Fogleman’s staff experience heavily emphasized long-range programming and strategic planning. While serving as Chief of Staff, United States Air Force, he hosted the first worldwide conference of air chiefs. He has a bachelor’s degree from the USAF Academy (1963) and a master’s degree in Military History and Political Science from Duke University (1971). He lectures on leadership, international affairs and military issues and has published numerous articles on air and space operations.

    Kriss Larsen
    Professional Title:  Music Teacher

    Voice and piano teacher of adults and children in fine arts camp in Lenox, MA; private school in Wellesley, MA; and junior college in Alexandria, VA. Maintained private voice studio for 15 years in New York City, Boston, and Washington, DC.

    Mary F. Barter, Ph.D.
    Professional Title:  School Superintendent

    Dr. Barter is superintendent of schools for Durango School District 9-R. She joined the school district in August 1999 after a national search by a broadly based citizen/staff committee and appointment by the board of education. Dr. Barter has been a superintendent for 22 years in school districts in Minnesota, New York, and Colorado and ranging in size from 800 students to 7,500 students. A recipient of numerous honors at the state and local level, Dr. Barter was recently re-elected to a position on the executive committee of the national superintendent’s organization, the American Association of School Administrators.

    Dr. Barter has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in sociology and psychology, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in supervision and instruction, and a doctorate from the same institution in urban education. Her special interests extend beyond school district leadership to include children’s issues, advancing the role of women in administration, and the politics of education.

    Daniel (Dan) J. Schler
    Professional Title:  Educator

    Education: B.S. degree University of Missouri, Columbia; M.S. and Ph.D., University of Missouri.

    Career: Dan taught vocational agriculture to Korean war veterans in the Ozarks; assistant to the superintendent of a children’s home in St. Louis, Missouri; supervised the construction of a hospital and worked with villages in British Togoland (now Ghana) West Africa; community assistance, program and curriculum development, departmental administration, and university director of International and Peace Corps training; staff and faculty member of the University of Colorado, Boulder and Denver campuses, with duties including program and curriculum development and administration, teaching, research, community service, and departmental and college administration.

    Dan, currently retired, is professor emeritus, College of Architecture and Planning, University of Colorado, Boulder and Denver, a member of the Colorado Land Use Commission. Raised in a mid-Missouri community, he lived and worked the family farm until attending college in 1946. He lives with his wife on a farm near Durango, Colorado.

    William A. Lupien
    Professional Title:  Chairman, OptiMark Technologies, Inc.

    Education: Graduate of San Diego State University.

    Career Profile: Mr. Lupien established OptiMark Technologies, Inc. in 1996, with a mandate to improve the structure and operational capabilities of the securities market. He is co-inventor of OptiMark's patented trading technology, a revolutionary method of structuring markets for securities and other fungible items. The OptiMarkTM Trading System currently operates as a facility of the Nasdaq Stock Market and of the Pacific Exchange.

    As chairman, Mr. Lupien plays a major role in building awareness of the company's technology, in the securities and non-securities arenas.

    Mr. Lupien has been active in the securities industry since joining the California-based brokerage firm of Mitchum, Jones & Templeton, Inc. (MJT), in 1965. He served as chairman and CEO of MJT, and also as a specialist on the floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange for 17 years. He was a Nasdaq market-maker for five years.

    He left MJT in 1983 to serve as president, then chairman and CEO of Instinet Corporation. Lupien was responsible for Instinet's move into trading Nasdaq stocks and during his tenure, Instinet's trading volumes increased tenfold, its revenues increased seventeen-fold, and the company was acquired by Reuters Plc.

    In addition to his work within the securities industry, Mr. Lupien has served on numerous private and public company boards, including a current position as Trustee of the Securities Industry Institute.

    Career Profile:
    Charlie joined the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington following graduate school as a post-doctoral fellow (1961-63) and staff scientist (1963-66). In 1966 he joined the Department of Geological Sciences at Harvard University as Professor of Mineralogy. During his 30 years at Harvard he taught courses in mineralogy, crystallography, environmental geology, and field geology; and led freshman seminars on glaciers and ice ages. His research focused primarily on structural mineralogy. He and his students described several new minerals, including one from the moon; pioneered crystal structure studies at high temperatures and pressures; and developed computer modeling techniques that have provided insights into the energetics of a variety of complex silicate minerals. He was departmental adviser to under­graduate concentrators in geological sciences for 20 years, advised a number of undergraduate honors theses, and was a principal adviser to some 25 graduate students, many of whom now hold significant positions in major American universities. He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is a member of AAAS, and the American Geophysical Union. He is a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and has served on its board of directors (1981-84), and as its president (1989).

    In 1996 Charlie retired from Harvard, and moved from New England to Durango. Since then he and his wife have traveled extensively, lecturing to Harvard alumni and Museum of Natural History groups on plate tectonics, glaciers and ice ages, volcanology, paleoclimate and global warming. These travels have taken them to Alaska, Arctic Canada, Patagonia, Antarctica, and most recently to Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and Kamchatka.

    Volunteer Affiliations and Interests:
    Since 1953 Charlie has been a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the oldest mountaineering and environmental organization in the United States, now with over 75,000 members. He has served on its board of directors, and as its president (1979-80). In the 1980’s he represented AMC’s interests with the US Forest Service, and worked with other stakeholders to pass a wilderness bill for lands in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. He is a life trustee of the Mount Washington Observatory, a meteorological observatory and research station atop New England's highest mountain peak.

    An avid skier, Charlie has been an alpine ski racing official since the early 1980’s. He served as a timing official at the FIS World Championships at Vail/Beaver Creek in 1999, as a gate judge at the Calgary Olympic Winter Games in 1988, and as head gate judge at the Snowbasin venue during the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games in 2002. He is presently vice president of Rocky Mountain Ski Race Officials, Inc., and chairperson of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association Alpine Officials Working Group.

    Mary Sue has devoted her life to her family, home, and community. Along the way, she has raised two children and supported her husband in his academic career as well as his participation in many volunteer activities. She has maintained the family home and provided assistance to aging parents. She enjoys the family's active lifestyle of hiking, skiing and extensive travel to many parts of the world.
    In the workplace, Mary Sue has worked as Secretary to the Department of Romance Languages at Harvard University, (1960-62), Church Secretary/Administrator for her church, (1971-86), Manpower, Inc. (1988-90), and office support for Camp Waukeela, Eaton Center, NH (1990-92).
    In the community, Mary Sue volunteered as a Den Mother, library page, Sunday School teacher, publicity coordinator for the hospital auxiliary, and coordinated many fund raising projects such as quilts for the ABC project, antique shows for the church ladies association, yard sales, bake sales, etc.
    Currently, Mary Sue is busy enjoying her new role as a grandmother. Her life is filled with new experiences, many friends, much travel, great opportunities to be out of doors, and a change to explore her new passion for quilting and other crafts.

These include technical research activities in catalysis, coal characterization and beneficiation, process chemistry, block copolymers, analytical chemistry, and managerial assignments in analytical chemistry, polymers and internal consulting groups. Served on the Leadership Teams for Shell Oil Company’s Exploration and Production Research Center (Bellaire, Texas) and Royal Dutch Shell’s Shell Exploration and Production Technology Applications and Research (Rijswijk, The Netherlands) prior to retirement in 2000.

    Thomas L. Jones

    Career Profile:  Ten years with Harris-McBurney Company, an engineering and construction company specializing in communications and electrical distribution work in fifteen eastern and midwestern states. Responsibilities included marketing, labor relations and eventually direct line responsibility for the seven hundred employees in operations.

    Twenty-six years with Verizon and its predecessor GTE. Responsibilities included: designing and implementing the optimum business process for both current and future capital investment management through which the firm controlled its annual three billion dollar capital program; directing a current planning, engineering, and construction organization in a line capacity; and leading an organization of a thousand employees with end to end responsibility for all network operations for six states and five million customers.

    Donald Bruning
    Professional Title: Chairman and Curator, Department of Ornithology, Wildlife Conservation Society.

    Education: PhD. and MA Colorado University, undergraduate work at UCLA and Colorado University. Thesis research was conducted in NY and in Argentina on the Grey Rhea.

    Professional career: Don started his Zoo career as a curatorial trainee at the New York Zoological Park (Bronx Zoo) in 1967. He became assistant curator in 1969, associate in 1973 and curator in 1975 and chairman in 1986. Don also supervised an extensive travel program of the Society from 1974 to 1986. He served as adjunct professor at Fordham University between 1974 and 1986 as well as teaching courses at Manhattanville college. Don taught courses for the veterinary school of the University of Pennsylvania as well as giving lectures at Cornell University and to many local audubon, and avicultural groups.

    Don served the American Zoo and Aquarium Association in many ways over the years. He served on the AZA Board, and chaired their Ethics Board, their Wildlife Management and Conservation Committee as well as their program and legislative committees.

    Don represented AZA and WCS on the Cooperative Working Group on the Bird Trade from 1988 to 1991. He testified before congress to help get the passage of the Wild Bird Conservation Act. He advised and helped the state of New York develop its regulations on bird and animal trade in the state. Don developed and gave training courses for USFWS and USDA officers in bird identification.

    Don has written over 100 articles for professional and hobbyist journals and newsletters. He served as advisor to Time Life Books on many of their nature and wildlife series. He authored a book with photographer Art Wolf on Bald Eagles.

    International work: Don served as the representative for WCS and AZA to the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) from 1985 through 2002. These international meeting determine the international endangered status of flora and fauna around the world. These conferences were held in Buenos Aires Argentina (1985), Ottawa, Canada (1987),Lausanne Switzerland (1989), Kyoto, Japan (1992), Ft Lauderdale , Florida (1994), Harare, Zimbabwi (1997), Nairobi, Kenya (2000), and Santiago, Chile (2002).

    Don has served on the Council of the Bahamas National Trust, and on the Boards of the Research and Conservation Foundation of Papua New Guinea, the Faunalink Foundation, the American Pheasant and Waterfowl Society, Hawaiian Bird Advisory Committee, and the Malaysian Wildlife Department Advisory Committee. Don has conducted numerous collecting trips to Papua New Guinea and helped establish the conservation foundation there. He helped establish a large protected area, Crater Mountain Wildlife Management Area in PNG along with developing an intensive education program for Papua New Guinea.

    Don and his wife Barbara are retiring to Colorado and moved to Durango in 2002.
