Badger House provided over 12,000 sherds and 25 vessels that were typed as Mancos. A type site such as this, with a huge inventory to study, offers the advantage of statistically meaningful generalizations. At the same time, this very strong presentation from a limited locality cannot be assumed to rule absolutely at other places, especially those at a distance.
Among the illustrated Long House sherds typed as Mancos are some with distinctive characteristics seen on Badger House sherds typed as Cortez. These include the starburst triangle arrangement, triangle-studded line, and ‘checker-board triangles.
The Long House report finds the Mancos/McElmo separation much more distinct than the McElmo/Mesa Verde, but does report Mancos design elements that are common in both succeeding types.
