Project Title: Evaluation of the Medicinal Value of Exotic Lycium (Wolfberry) species compared to native Lycium species occuring in the Four Corners Region of New Mexico

Project Location: Library research and most laboratory work will be performed in the Biology Department at San Juan College.  Travel will be required to collect plant tissue from native populations within the Four Corners region and exotic Lycium species cultivated at the NMSU Agricultural Science Center.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to learn specific analytical techniques like HPLC at a lab either at Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado or at the New Mexico State University main campus.

Project Title: Early snowmelt in the alpine tundra: monitoring ecosystem impacts following an extreme climate year

Project Location: Students working on this project will have the opportunity to work outdoors and in the laboratory to contribute to data collection in the third year of an on-going study at Molas Pass, CO.  Field work will be conducted in an alpine meadow near Little Molas Lake.  Lab work will be completed in Berndt Hall on campus at Fort Lewis College.  Students can select to participate more in either the field or lab components depending on their interest. 

Project Prerequisites: No prerequisite courses; I will provide training of key concepts as well as all field and lab skills.
