Carrie Meyer, EdD, ATC Director Athletic Training Education

Carrie Meyer has been focused on Athletic Training education for over 15 years. She graduated from South Dakota State University’s accredited Athletic Training undergraduate program in 1993 and became a certified athletic trainer in 1994. She continued her education at University of Oregon’s accredited post-professional master’s program in Athletic Training. While at Oregon, Meyer had the opportunity to work with women’s volleyball and football as well as helping with men’s and women’s basketball, and track & field — including hosting the NCAA track & field championships. Meyer completed her doctoral degree in Higher Education along with a graduate certificate in Institutional Research from Arizona State University in 2005.

 Jeb Davis is a Ph.D. Candidate (in progress) from the University of New Mexico in Curriculum & Instruction. He has an M.S. from California University of Pennsylvania in Athletic Training, and a B.S. from New Mexico State University in Athletic Training Education. He is also a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

Barger supervises four assistant athletic trainers in the athletic training room. He was head athletic trainer from 1995-2012. During this time, the athletic training education program at Fort Lewis became a nationally-accredited program by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).


Vanessa Nersten, MSc, ATC Assistant Athletic Trainer/Instructor

Vanessa Nersten joined the Skyhawks in August 2012.  She has an M.S. in Sports Medicine: Strength and Conditioning from UC-Colorado Springs (UCCS).  As a UCCS graduate assistant for the Mountain Lions, Nersten oversaw softball, cross country, and track & field.  Prior to her graduate degree at UCCS, Nersten earned a B.S. in Athletic Training from Eastern Washington in 2010.  Nersten is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and is a Board of Certifications Certified Athletic Trainer, State of Colorado Registered Certified Athletic Trainer, and American Red Cross Professional Rescuer and AED certified.
