Steve Short is a Durango area native. He was raised on a ranch located in the Animas River Valley south of Durango. He and his wife Jane have one adult son.
Following graduation from high school, Steve attended Fort Lewis College and then Colorado State University where he obtained a BS degree in Animal Science. Subsequently, he completed a MS degree in Animal Science/Reproductive Physiology at North Carolina State University. Steve is also a graduate of the Colorado Graduate School of Banking at the University of Colorado.
Steve joined the staff of First National Bank of Durango in September of 1983. He was promoted to the position of President and CEO of the organization in January of 2000. In December 2010, Steve stepped from President to Chairman of the Board. Prior to his employment by First National Bank, he worked five years for the Federal Land Bank in Durango and other Colorado locations, and also for the Colorado State University Extension Service.
Community service endeavors are a priority for Steve. He completed a 15-month term on the School District 9-R Board of Education and currently serves on the boards of Durango Industrial Development Foundation, Music in the Mountains, and the Independent Bankers of Colorado, a trade association representing community banks throughout the State of Colorado.
Steve has previously served on the boards of Fort Lewis College Foundation, La Plata County Fair, Mercy Health Foundation and La Plata Economic Development Partnership, among others. He was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association, serving two separate terms (1984-1987 and 2001-2002) and held the position of President of the Board in 1986. Activities focusing on the assurance of the economic, educational and cultural well-being of Durango and its environs are important to Steve and will continue to receive his support and participation. His term will expire Dec. 31, 2015.
