Creating a Cover Letter

The Cover Letter is different than the resume.  The resume is a list of data; concrete information.  The cover letter allows you to integrate, synthesize and energize your application.  It can go beyond what is on the resume.  See our quick tips below!  Or for more information visit: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/6/22/

Format Strategies

Just as it is with the resume, the cover letter needs to be easy to read.  Use any appropriate business letter format.  Avoid fancy layouts, busy fonts and graphics.

  • Use clean font—such as arial, calibri, verdana
  • Use a space between paragraphs
  • Signature—leave 4 spaces between the closing and your typed name

Content Strategies

First Paragraph

Why are you writing?  “I am applying for…”; “I am writing regarding the position of…”

Connection—skills, referral, familiarity with employer product, services, etc.

Second Paragraph

The second paragraph is the one in which you can demonstrate what you have that connects you to the position and employer.

  • Connect the skills, knowledge, experience on the resume
  • What insights you have learned
  • What makes you the best candidate

Third Paragraph

The third paragraph should reference what is enclosed, (resume).  Ask for the opportunity to discuss the position, and your interest.  Close the letter with a positive, enthusiastic statement.

Closing

“Sincerely,”;  “Sincerely yours,”; “Cordially”; etc.

(Space down 4 spaces for signature)
