Conclusion
The Darkmold site was in excellent condition prior to
excavation for a single-family dwelling, which compromised an undetermined
portions of the site. The site is among four (Falls Creek, Talus Village,
Tamarron) Basketmaker II sites from the Durango Area. This site, one of
few open-air Basketmaker II period sites, represents emergent stages of
agriculture in the southwest and thus forms the basis for sedentary lifestyle
throughout the New World. The site has ample remains to produce extremely
significant information.
Because the site is located on private property and the
landowner has been more than cooperative regarding the importance of the
integrity of the site, it is being well preserved. It should be noted that
considering the damage that could have been done during the construction
efforts, the site has remarkably good integrity and offers an excellent
opportunity to continue research into early occupation in the Durango area.
However, it is the intent of the landowner that sometime in the distant future
that the land on which 5LP4991 is located will be developed. It is therefore
imperative that the Fort Lewis College archaeological field school explore the
importance of this site in order to develop a plan for the continued management
of this significant site and ultimately to provide the public with a better
understanding of the importance and relevance of archaeology and preserving the
past.
