Sustainability at FLC

Fort Lewis College has a passion for sustainability. From the time I took my first tour of Fort Lewis, more than four years ago, I have been impressed by how much students and teachers care about sustainability. I was lucky enough to qualify for a work-study position so I immediately went to the Environmental Center and applied for a job. I was so happy to get a position on the local food team where I got to both learn about the local food movement in Durango and do my part to promote local food.

Making the choice

I couldn’t have chosen a better college to attend and every day I am extremely thankful that I chose Fort Lewis. I attended high school in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and I knew that it would be very hard for me to leave Glenwood because it is such a beautiful, small mountain town with many outdoor activities available all year round. As high school was coming to an end, I knew that I would not be able to go to an out of state college. I wanted to go to a school where I could easily go skiing without driving a long way to the mountain.

Engine Creek Ride!

Yes, it is true—most bikes in Durango are worth more than a person’s car. I, myself, am almost guilty of that logic. Mountain bike riding is an amazing experience in Durango, and there are thousands of miles of trails that individuals can ride right outside their backdoor.  I have done a good number of those “in town” rides, but the most epic ride that I have been on so far was a bit north of town. The name of the trail is Engine Creek Trail; a steep climb up Engineer Mountain followed by a techy downhill descent all around the circumference of Engineer Mountain is what makes this trail my favorite trail by far.

1000 miles to Durango

I have always loved the mountains. That’s why when I found Fort Lewis College during my junior year of college, I didn’t hesitate at the opportunity to transfer here. When I decided to move here, I sort of knew one person that I had gone to high school with in St. Louis four years before. Other than that, I didn’t know anyone in the town. I couldn’t have imagined how easy it was going to be to make new friends as a transfer student.

Great classes, nice people, mountains and bluegrass

I will never stop loving Fridays. Since I moved to Durango there has been an amazing freedom that I feel every Friday. Yesterday my Friday started as most days do: woke up early, made tea, listened to some bluegrass, and sat on my front porch getting some early morning Durango fresh air and sunshine. After breakfast and a chat with my roommates, I walked a few minutes to the bus stop where I waited with a few friends who live near by.
