Finding a balance I came to college simply expecting a degree, a simple diploma in hand. Now almost half way through my time here, I can already affirm I’ve gained so much more. I’ve walked a knotty road of stretching myself far too thin and had to bounce back from a fluctuating ebb and flow of people and places buzzing around me in a busy chatter. Coming to college has been a meaningful journey and I’ve learned many important lessons, though one lesson stands out to me the most: finding a balance between work and play. Work hard. Play hard. Fort Lewis is enjoying a thirteenth day of sunny skies and balmy January temperatures between 45 and 50 degrees. It is early Monday morning, the beginning of the third week of the semester. Each day is starting to blur into the next as a comfortable routine has developed. My mornings begin with my cat sprawled outside my bedroom door staring at me with suspicious eyes. Over the next 14-16 hours, I exist in a fairly rigid schedule. The colorful balls in the air all have labels, which read: classes, research, tutoring, studying, ambassador, friend, roommate, climbing, cooking, chores, etc. Read the rest of entry »

Two Ecuadorian experiences and one new career path

When I applied to Fort Lewis College, I thought I knew exactly what career path I wanted to pursue. My plan was to get a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and enter a master’s program for Child Life Specialists. Shortly after I was accepted, I had my first encounter with Village Aid Project-Engineers Without Borders (VAP-EWB). During the Albuquerque area open house, clips of VAP-EWB projects were shown. I had just committed to Fort Lewis College and the opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream for international service made me even more excited! After the video completed, I whispered to my mother, “I am going to do that.” Four years later, my career path is more ambitious and I am more compassionate toward others thanks to VAP-EWB.

Myth: Scholarships are hard to get and not worth the time.

Truth: Anyone can get scholarships -- you just have to do it right.

As a senior in high school I knew I wanted to go to college, but I also knew I didn’t want to graduate and begin the rest of my life in debt.
