Finding my path

Over the years my answer to the question, what do you want to be when you grow up?, was constantly changing: from being a marine biologist to a forensic pathologist and even a geologist. In my freshman year at Fort Lewis I declared a political science major and with that I thought I had finally found my answer to the question – I wanted a career in politics.

Summertime and the livin’s easy

When you think of summer, what are some things that pop into your head? Sunshine? Tanning? Hanging with friends? What about not showering for 10 days at a time? Living outside? Or even the forearm muscles of a champion? If you spend a summer doing trail work, option B will comprise your summer much more accurately. The summer after my freshman year of college, I decided that I wanted to do something different, something that would put me out of my comfort zone. I worked for the Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) and blazed trails throughout the Southwest area.

VIDEO: A day in the life of Jake

What is it like to be a student at Fort Lewis College? In our "Day in the life" series, we'll explore student life at FLC through the eyes of our students. In this episode, we meet Jake, a senior Biology major who aspires to be a veterinarian. On a typical day, Jake hikes up to campus, meets with his research advisor in the Honors Program, goes to his neurobiology class, and works at a local small animal veterinary clinic.

Growing up has never seemed so hard

I get asked the same question every time I tell people I am graduating in December: “What are your plans after college?” Until about 2 weeks ago, I literally had not a clue and it scared me half to death. Wait, graduation means I actually have to be in the real world? I have to stop using ‘being in college’ as an excuse to be broke and to not work all that much. I no longer want to call my parents asking them for money so I can go out of town for the weekend – it’s now my responsibility. Growing up has never seemed so hard, even though all I have ever wanted to do was grow up and be able to do what I want.

Not being just a student

When I started at Fort Lewis College, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was always getting asked the same question over and over by everyone I met: what’s your major? There are so many different choices when you arrive: majors, minors, clubs, teams, and exciting things to choose from. I had no idea where to start. So, I went with what I was always told I excelled in: writing.
