When you think of summer, what are some things that pop into your head? Sunshine? Tanning? Hanging with friends? What about not showering for 10 days at a time? Living outside? Or even the forearm muscles of a champion? If you spend a summer doing trail work, option B will comprise your summer much more accurately. The summer after my freshman year of college, I decided that I wanted to do something different, something that would put me out of my comfort zone. I worked for the Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) and blazed trails throughout the Southwest area.

It’s not a lie: Snyder B was the place to be. All the residents were always there. Even people who were not residents in Snyder B were always there. We mobbed over to dinner all together, we went camping all together, and we went out on the weekends all together. We had heard legends of Snyder B residents from the past and yearned to be college legends as well.

When I was a senior in high school, I only had one priority in mind: get out of the small town in New Mexico that I was from. I had lived in a small town my entire life, a place where everyone in town knows your family, where you can’t go to the store or a movie without seeing at least one person you know, and where nearly everyone knows your business.

Who ever said there was an age limit for dressing up for Halloween? Well, come to Durango and there isn’t one! Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays in Durango for many reasons. First, it’s the one day a year where you can wear whatever you want and still fit right in. Fort Lewis students and the Durango community know how to truly celebrate when October 31st rolls around.
