Studying the Environment at Fort Lewis College

There are numerous ways to study the environment at Fort Lewis College.

The Fall of 2007 will mark the beginning of a new, interdisciplinary Environmental Studies degree program at Fort Lewis College.

Other degree programs related to Environmental Studies include:

Environmental Policy Minor

Agroecology/Sustainable Agriculture Minor

Mountain Studies Minor

Students interested in environmental science can choose to major in environmental biology or Environmental Geology.

The EC will lends support to these program through its library, which houses over 2,000 books, magazines, and videos, and by providing information on summer jobs, internships, and graduate schools for students.

In 2006, the EC also helped organize a learning community for first-year students entitled “Sustainability, Justice, and Cultural Transformation” that combined study of globalization, indigenous knowledge, and medicinal crops with guest speakers on local environmental issues and field trips around the region.  For Fall of 2007, the Environmental Center is organizing a special living community, the LIFE House.  LIFE stands for Learning to Invest in the Future of the Earth and is for students with an interest in cultural diversity, community service, and environmental sustainability.
