| EC volunteers work with students from Ignacio Peace Jam on an environmental mural - March 2008 |
The Environmental Center’s education and outreach program works to increase involvement in the EC programs and community projects by students and community members.
Our E&O team puts on workshops in the residence halls, organizes hands-on project, and sponsors talks and presentations, all with the goal of moving people to take action on the important issues. Our staff is available to help match interested students with ongoing EC and SEEDS-Campus Ecology projects.
The E&O team works with other staff members to organize Earth Week during the month of March, which provides a full-week of programs and activities based around a particular theme. The Earth Week that keynote address by a leading advocate for environmental awareness and social justice is our largest event of the year. Past speakers have included: Vandana Shiva, David Orr, John Todd, and Derrick Jensen.
The LIFE House is another component of our education and outreach program. LIFE stands for Learning to Invest in the Future of the Earth. Participating students live together and share their diverse skills and perspectives on social, cultural, and environmental issues while working together to make a difference on campus and in the community.
The E&O team also meets with groups in the community and represents the EC in partnerships with a number of local organizations.
For 2008-09 we would like to partner with one or more schools or youth programs on environmental or social justice projects. If you are interested in working with us, contact education and outeach coordinator Andrea Rossi.
If you have an idea for an event or would like to connect with the EC, e-mail our education and outreach team at ec_outreach@fortlewis.edu.
