On Thursday, January 31st, over 1,500 campuses around the country including Fort Lewis College will be participating in Focus the Nation, a nationwide teach-in on solutions to global warming.  Focus the Nation will bring together faculty, students and staff at colleges and universities, high schools, middle schools and elementary schools across the United States for a non-partisan discussion about the causes and consequences of climate change, potential solutions, and actions we can take to address this critical issue.  

 

Events at Fort Lewis College will start on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. with a live webcast from Washington D.C. featuring climate scientist Stephen Schneider, human rights activist Van Jones, and author Hunter Lovins at 6:00 p.m. in the Fort Lewis College ballroom.

 

On Thursday, the day begins at 8:30 a.m. in the College Union Ballroom and will continue until 8:00 p.m. and include 22 lectures, discussions, and films.  Presentations include:

  • Presentation of Fort Lewis College’s first ever Greenhouse Gas Inventory
  • Progress report on the City/County Greenhouse Gas Inventory
  • Presentation about the new Four Corners Office of Resource Efficiency
  • Description of the energy exhibits at the Durango Discovery Museum
  • Update on the San Juan Biodiesel Cooperative
  • A special theatrical presentation in honor of Ye Olde Snowdown: “Sir Clive the Climate Crusader and the Quest for the Grail of Green Power”

There will be showings of the films An Inconvenient Truth, Who Killed the Electric Car, End of Suburbia, and the new sequel Escape from Suburbia.  The event will also highlight numerous opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community.  For the full schedule of events scroll down the page.

 

This free event is hosted by the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center and is open to all who care about the future of our planet.  Drop by the College Union Building at Fort Lewis College on Thursday, January 31st to learn how you can become involved in the future of our world.

Focus the Nation will stream a free, live, interactive webcast called The 2% SOLUTION. Join Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins and green jobs pioneer Van Jones and youth climate leaders, for a discussion of global warming solutions. Audiences can weigh in with cell phone voting.
