Eco-Garden and Greenhouse

The Environmental Center partners with the SEEDS-Campus Ecology Club to maintain an organic demonstration garden and greenhouse behind Juniper Hall, which houses the Program for Academic Advancement.
The garden provides opportunities for students to get their hands dirty learning about sustainable food production. Work on the garden began in the fall of 2001 with the first plants going in the ground in May of 2002. EC students received help from Oakhaven Permaculture Center to create a plan for the garden beds.

The garden now serves as a demonstration site, showcasing important organic and permaculture techniques such as companion planting, cold frames, hot beds, trellis, container, and square-foot gardening techniques. In the fall of 2005, the EC and SEEDS-Campus Ecology received support from ASFLC student government to purchase a 9’ x 16’ greenhouse to extend the growing season and provide a stable environment for young plants during the variable months of spring and fall. In the future, the greenhouse can also serve as an on-campus nursery for native plants used in landscape restoration.

For the 2008-09 school year the garden will be moving to new location! Stay tuned as we take our gardening program to the next level.
