Step 1: Building a Foundation
EC Coordinator Marcus Renner and EC student staffers Jackie Kuusinen and Whitney Blakstad attended the Rocky Mountain Sustainability Summit at CU-Boulder in February 2007. While there, they see the number of colleges and universities signing on to the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment grow in a matter of days. At the same time, they learn that other Colorado universities have developed action plans to bring their campuses together around the shared goal of campus sustainability.

Returning to FLC, they present the results of the conference to the President's Advisory Council on Environmental Affairs in March. Thanks to the research of EC's resident climate warrior, Jackie Kuusinen '07, whose senior project outlined the steps necessary to fulfill the commitment, President Bartel agrees to make Fort Lewis a charter signatory. President Bartel signs the commitment on April 6, 2007 prior to the Earth Week keynote address by noted environmental author David Orr.

The pledge commits FLC to conducting a greenhouse gas inventory within a year and completing a climate action plan within two years that will allow Fort Lewis to achieve climate neutrality. The commitment allows the college to set its own timeline for achieving climate neutrality and to determine the most appropriate actions and ideas to implement. In the short term. the President announces that all new buildings will meet or exceed the standards for a LEED-Silver rating and that Fort Lewis will purchase energy efficient appliances and computers where such ratings exist.
