Fort Lewis College

 

Fort Lewis College Department of Agriculture - Fort Lewis College has a deep, rich history in agriculture. In 1911, the school established a secondary school along the lines of agriculture, horticulture, animal industry, household and mechanical arts. A demonstration farm specialized in high altitude agronomy and horticulture research.  At Fort Lewis College, you'll find quality classroom instruction and opportunities to get your hands dirty in laboratories, field experiences, internships and community based learning.

 

EC Local Food Project - Fort Lewis College has a deep, rich history in agriculture. Agriculture students have done internships with the US Forest Service, CSU Agriculture Experiment Station in nearby Hesperus and Durango Natural Foods, among others.

 

Old Fort Site - The old Fort site is the original site of Fort Lewis College, in 1880, and is located 16 miles southwest of Durango.  It consists of 6318 acres on the LaPlata river and also served as a Military fort, Indian school, High school, Two-year college and now as the San Juan Basin Research Center.

Community Food Security Coalition -  The Community Food Security Coalition (CFSC) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), North American organization dedicated to building strong, sustainable, local and regional food systems that ensure access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food for all people at all times. They seek to develop self-reliance among all communities in obtaining their food and to create a system of growing, manufacturing, processing, making available, and selling food that is regionally based and grounded in the principles of justice, democracy, and sustainability.

Occidental Center for Arts & Ecology - a nonprofit organizing and education center and organic farm in Northern California’s Sonoma County. OAEC was founded in 1994 by a group of biologists, horticulturists, educators, activists, and artists seeking innovative and practical approaches to the pressing environmental and economic crises of our day. Much of the Center’s work addresses the challenges of creating democratic communities that are ecologically, economically and culturally sustainable in an increasingly privatized and corporatized economy and culture. OAEC's programs combine research, demonstration, education, and organizing to develop collaborative, community-based strategies for positive social change and effective environmental stewardship.

The Center for Food Safety - is a public interest and environmental advocacy organization that works to address the impacts of our food production system on human health, animal welfare and the environment.

Food First - is a member-supported, nonprofit 'peoples' think tank and education-for-action center. Their work highlights root causes and value-based solutions to hunger and poverty around the world, with a commitment to establishing food as a fundamental human right.

Genetically Engineered Food Alert - is a coalition of seven organizations united in their commitment to testing and labeling genetically engineered food.
