There is more to night photography than meets the eye. Long exposures must be utilized to create an expanded moment which is seen as a single image. This visual and inspiring course explores the artistic and technical challenges of developing a sense of photographic night vision. Artistic topics such as composition and impact of low light images are discussed. Technical information on exposure techniques and alternative lighting is covered. Practical issues dealing with motion, changing light and weather conditions are also explored. Slide presentations expose students to the many possibilities of nighttime image making. Two nighttime field sessions followed by classroom review and discussion allow students to learn from their own vision and experience. The class is open to photographers of all levels of experience. Students must be able to control their camera exposures manually. Both film and digital cameras are welcome. Students should bring a camera and a tripod to all the classes. Dana Foy is an award-winning photographer with over 18 years of experience in night photography.
