Sage Petersen

Fee: $109, 11 classes

THUR, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Kettlebells look like cannon balls with handles and provide a full body workout of weight resistance fitness which incorporates yoga poses, breathing techniques, strength and ultimate core strength. It is considered the martial art of fitness because the techniques build on each other and require improved strength, focus and body mechanics as you go. In fact practitioners will reap the benefits of cardio training, strength training, and flexibility in a one hour class through the concepts, principles and unique exercises presented. A limited number of Kettlebells in different weights will be available in class, but if you’re interested in purchasing your own or learning more, please go to www.dragondoor.com. You may also find good deals on kettlebells on EBay. There are different brands of kettlebells and Sage recommends RKC (Russian Kettlebell Challenge). A  mat will be helpful, but not mandatory, for the class. The Quest for Happiness and Meaning: Religion, Psychology and Science

James A Kline, PhD

WED, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Fee: $89, 6 classes

   October 1 - November 5

From the beginning of recorded history, humans have documented their attempts to address the problem of suffering, find happiness, and achieve an understanding of themselves and their world.  Religion, Psychology and the Physical Sciences have all attempted, in various ways, and with differing methods, to answer questions about humans, the universe, and the relationship between the two. Often interaction between these fields has yielded acrimonious debate. Yet, one can also find areas of significant overlap and agreement. This course will explore, primarily through discussion, two different but related streams of thought. First, we will consider, at a very basic level, the search to understand and find meaning as it has developed in Religion, Psychology and Science. The focus will be on those places where the different fields overlap and complement each other. Included will be an examination of how language can shape and sometimes obscure answers. The role of epistemology in the search for understanding will also be considered. The second focus of discussion will be on defining happiness (and its opposite, suffering), and considering how one can find and/or create happiness in one's own life. Various alternatives will be explored.  Learned Optimism, a term coined by psychologist Martin Seligman (and the title of his book on the subject) will be examined as an example of one type of solution to the search for happiness. Dr. Kline is a Colorado licensed Psychologist with a long history of interest and experience in both Western and Eastern traditions of study. He received a BA from Northwestern University in 1964, and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1969. He has served as a Staff Psychologist at Mendocino State Hospital in Talmage, CA, a Professor of Psychology at California State University, Chico, and a Staff Psychologist at Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver, and has maintained a private practice since returning to Colorado in 1985. He has been active in professional organizations, and his work has been published in a variety of professional journals. He has authored a book on domestic violence, and is currently completing a book on the philosophy of science. His current practice, located in Durango, is limited to Integrative Psychotherapy and Forensic Psychology.

The Whole Truth about Domestic Violence: A Seminar for Men

James A Kline, PhD

Fee: $29, 1 class

SAT: 9:00 am – 12 Noon

   October 18

Nearly everyone has heard at least one story, whether on TV or via a newspaper, of a battered woman who has been savagely beaten, or even killed, by a husband or boyfriend. Such stories rightfully receive attention. What most people do not realize is that these are rare events, and not representative of intimate partner violence (IPV) as a whole. Depending on whom you talk to, you will hear dramatically different reports regarding of the frequency, configurations (including gender of the perpetrator), and causes of IPV in America. Not all victims come forward, and some who present themselves as victims are not.  Trying to sort out fact from fiction can be difficult and confusing.

This course, which is for men only, will use both empirical research findings and personal experience, to explore the ways in which men are victims, co-participants and perpetrators in intimate partner violence. Topics discussed will include: frequency of IPV, configurations of IPV (the "batterer" model vs. other models), causes of IPV, effects of IPV on children, and the problems with the criminal justice system solutions currently  employed to deal with IPV. Dr. Kline is a Colorado licensed Psychologist with 17 years of experience working in the domestic violence field. He has evaluated and/or treated approximately 1000 cases of domestic violence as a state certified treatment provider.  He has also carried out an extensive review of the research literature and published a book detailing the results of his review. He has served as a professor of psychology at California State University, Chico, and as Staff Psychologist at Mendocino State Hospital in Talmage, CA and at Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver. He has been active in professional organizations serving as Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Psychological Association, and is a Past President of the Metro Denver Interdisciplinary Committee on Child Custody. He currently maintains a part-time practice in Durango.
