Discover the Treasure

You are the treasure, despite the world’s pressure on us to compete for wealth, beauty, possessions, and power as a reason for being. Strong families know the key to life is meaningful connections with one another, especially during times of great change. We are stronger when we work together, and small communities understand this fact. The heart of our Continuing Education mission is right there: to connect you - our community - with the college, one another, and to dedicated instructors who will teach and inspire. The end goal is to pursue lifelong learning and live to honor the best gifts we have in life: one another.

During class registrations and confirmations, we have the privilege of seeing our community in a different and beautiful light. Students of all ages call us with enthusiasm to learn something new and share a common interest with others. As an adult learner, you will bring as much to the classroom as you take away, and your experience and knowledge is an important part of the educational experience for everyone in the class.

Once again, the Continuing Education Fall 2009 Catalog presents you with wonderful teachers who are committed to bringing us interesting classes. Your part is to simply sign up and participate. Let your little light shine and join us in a classroom to connect with our community in a healthy way. Find the treasure that you are, and that which awaits you when you do.

On behalf of everyone at CE and Fort Lewis College, thank you to all of our instructors and students (you!) who invest time and energy in our program. We know you will enjoy the 2009 Fall lineup and find a class that will strengthen your connection to life, learning and our community. Find the treasure!

How to take Continuing Education Courses

Just sign up! The registration process is simple:  call our office at (970) 247-7385 and register for one of our local non-credit classes (usually held in a classroom on campus in the evening or on a Saturday) and/or an online non-credit class (over 300 available). We have a few college credit classes; please call for information (970) 247-7385.

Requirements:
Non-credit classes are open to everyone, except where a specific age group is indicated in the course description. Credit classes are generally open to adults 18 years of age or older.

Registration:
Registration is required prior to the first class session for any course. You may register through the Continuing Education Office directly by telephone, mail, or from the "Registration Form" link on this webpage. Early registration greatly increases the chances of a class being held and guarantees your spot in classes with a cap on enrollment.  If a course has space available, you may register up to the second class meeting. To enroll after that time requires the instructor’s permission.

Telephone Registration: If you have a VISA , Discover Card, or MasterCard, you may register by telephone. Call (970) 247-7385 between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

In-Person Registration: You may come by the Continuing Education Office, 315 Reed Library on the Fort Lewis College campus between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. We love to meet our students in person!

Mail Registration: The Continuing Education Registration Form is printed on the back cover of our Course Catalog, or you may click here to open and print a copy. Please mail your completed form to the address below. Note: Please indicate your preferred method of payment on the form (include credit card info) but DO NOT mail checks or cash; we will request payment when the minimum enrollment for a class has been met.

Course Catalog:
Our CE Course Catalog can be picked up at our office on campus or at the following locations: Durango Doughworks, the Community Rec Center, the 55+ Senior Center, South City Market, Steamworks Brewing Co. (Durango), Natural Grocers, Nature's Oasis, Steaming Bean Coffee, Magpies Newsstand Cafe, Durango Joe's Coffee (both locations), 7-11 in Ignacio and all the area public libraries.

Withdrawal and Refund:

If you need to withdraw form a course, you must contact the Continuing Education office. Not attending class does not constitute withdrawal, and the course instructor cannot grant withdrawal or a refund. If you fail to withdraw, you will not receive any refund. If you fail to officially withdraw from a credit course, you will receive an administrative grade, which is unsatisfactory. Unless noted in the course description, refunds are granted as follows:

Courses extending beyond two weeks:

· 90% refund of tuition (not fees) if you withdraw prior to the second class session, however, a minimum of $10 is retained.
· No refund after the second class session.

Courses of two weeks or less duration:
· 90% refund of tuition (not fees) if you withdraw two or more weekdays in advance, however, a minimum of $10 is retained.
· 50% refund of tuition (not fees) if you drop the course during the two days prior to the first class session.
· No refund if you drop the course on or after the start date.

Class Cancellations:
Continuing Education is supported by tuition and fee income. In order for us to hold a course, we must meet a registration minimum. If you don’t want to see your course cancelled, register early! Classes will be cancelled one week prior to the start date if the minimum enrollment has not been met. Early registration also guarantees your spot in courses with limited capacity. We refrain from accepting/processing payments until the minimum enrollment for a course has been met, however, If your class is cancelled after you have paid, tuition and fees will be refunded as promptly as possible.

Grading:

Non-credit courses have no examinations and are not graded. In a credit-based course, you are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. You must fulfill all the requirements for the course, including tests and assignments. The grade recorded on your transcript will be a P or F. If you register for a course meeting college degree or specific program requirements, you should clear it with the appropriate administrator. If you wish to become a Fort Lewis College degree candidate, you must apply for admission (247-7184).

New Courses:
We are always looking for new courses to offer. If you have any ideas please contact us via email us at
