The race will be run in three or four heats. Each heat will consist of 24 swimmers, all starting the race at the same time.
Logistics of the swim portion:
The pool is divided into six lanes. Each lane will have 4 swimmers, 2 starting on each end. Groups of 4 will be determined by estimated swim time. The swimmers will circle their lane, counter clockwise. The race is 500 yds, equivalent to 10 laps (down and back) or 20 lengths. Swimmers will stay in their own lane for the entire distance. Swimmers will need to keep track of their laps (lap counters will be available, but the swimmer is ultimately responsible for their count).
As there are 4 swimmers per lane, swimmers are encouraged to discuss passing strategy before beginning their heat. It is suggested that if a swimmer wants to pass another, she/he taps the foot of the forward swimmer who will then allow for the pass at the end of the lane. The heats will begin 1 minute after all swimmers from the previous heat are out of the pool. A 5 minute penalty will be assessed to participants total time if their estimated time is more than 2 minutes greater or smaller than their actual pool time.
It is possible, though not likely, that some heat or lane assignments may change between now and race day.
Heat and lane assignments will be posted at the pool area on race day. You can also check with race staff at the pool who will have heat and lane information.
